', on A very pretty home wedding occur red 'yesterday afternoon at the rest dence of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Raske on Young's River when their daughter, Miss Elizabeth Mary Raske, and Mr. Prfint s. Lewis of this city were united In marriage. The Rev. C C. Rarick of the First Methodist Church nerfnrmincr the ceremony, using the beautiful and impressive ring service. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Ida Raske, as maid of honor and Miss Ida Baumgartner as bridesmaid. Mr. Bremner acted as groomsman. The bride was charmingly gowned in white with vail and orange blossoms and carried an arm bouquet of white carnations. The bridesmaids also car ried carnations. After the close of the ceremony, the guests offered the heartiest of congratulations and the bridal couple led the way to the din ing room where a sumptuous wedding dinner was served. The house was prettily decorated with ferns and vines for this festive occasion and about 35 intimate friends of the con tracting parties were present. ; Many handsome presents were received. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis will make their home for some time to come with the groom's mother, Mrs. V. Wright of 29 Astor street The members of the missionary so ciety of the First Presbyterian church met on Tuesday afternoon at the resi dence of Mrs. F. A. Fastabend on j .West Duane street. About 16 ladies were present and a very pleasant en tertaining meeting was held. The for eign topic for this month was India. Mrs. A. D. Garner giving a very in structive and interesting talk on the uplifting of the masses in that coun try Miss Myrtle Harrison them ren dered a piano selection. The home topic was "The Pacific Coast and Its Needs" (a subject very dear to the hearts of those who live in Astoria and vicinity). This subject received very scholarly treatment at the hands of Mrs. M. Linenweber who took the topic of the "Pacific Coast and Its Re lation to Gur Country," while Mrs. J. A. Eakin spoke at length on "Pio neering on 'the Coast," neither lady leaving anything to be desired in their discussion of these subjects. Miss Violet Fastabend favored those pres ent with a violin solo and the Misses Laura and Esther Jeffers rendered a violin duet which was greatly appre ciated. There were no special deco rations except a beautiful calla lily in full bloom. Mrs. Frank Donnerberg was hos- tess at her Commercial street home for a delightful meeting of the CloveV Club, members on Tuesday afternoon. Game were played and a dainty lunch served. The Thursday Afternoon Club members held a meeting this week at the residence of Mrs. Charles Brink on Fifteenth street. Three was a good attendance and the guests spent the afternoon in card playing at which Mrs. W. E. Tallant held high cards, Mrs A A Finch left this week for an extended visit with her mother in California V' ' Mrs. Geofite L. Cohvell entertained the members of the Thursday After noon Six-Handed Euchre Club at her home on Exchange street this week. The prize-winners on this occasion soon were Mrs. Kean and Mrs. Griggs. Mrs. J Paul Badolett. Miss Nan Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Thad S. Trullinger charmingly entertained the members of the Fortnightly Euchre Club on Friday evening at thi Trul linger home on Exchange street. Cards were played, the fortunate prize winners being Mrs. William Sherman and Mr. Richard G. Prael At the close of the card playing dainty re freshments were served This meet ing is the last that will be held and the members are thinking of winding up the season by giving a dancing party though no arrangements for such party have yet been made. On Friday evening Mrs. George Wood entertained the members of the Pastime Euchre Club at their last meeting for this season. Cards were played, Mrs. R- E. Howes and Mrs. F, Fisher winning the prizes. Miss Maude Ross spent the Easter vacation in Portland visiting with re latives and friends. The ladies of the English Lutheran Church held a very successful social and entertainment on Thursday after noon and evening in the Reed build- nig- on Duane street. In spite of the nclement weather many were in at tendance and all enjoyed the enter tainmnt offered. In the evening a musical program was rendered. Vocal and instrumental selections being giv en by Rev. and Mrs. Gustave E. Ryd (Juist, Mr. Zeigler, Miss Agnes Young and the church choir. County Treasurer and Mrs. Wm. A Sherman went to Portland last even ing to spend Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Willard R. Voorhees who are en route from San Francisco to Seattle. Mrs. Voorhees is Mrs. Sher man's cousin. v On last Tuesday evening a very in terestmg and instructive address on China and tht conditions existing in that "country was given in the audi torium of the First Presbyterian church by the Rev. Mr. Bible, former ly of Hang Chow, China. Mr. Bible has spent nine years in China and is thoroughly conversant with the pre vailing conditions there. His address which was witty and entertaining was listened to by a large and appreciative audience. ' , Lieutenant Stromberg of the U. S. S. Perry, now stationel at Seattle, is visiting friends in Astoria. -Mrs. F. P. Kendall and. family of Portland are spending a few weeks at their cottage at seaside, miss Woodward of Portland is the guest of Miss' Ada Kendall during their stay (here. The Kendall party, attended the high school dance here Tuesday evenimr returning to Seaside Wed uesday. ' , On Tuesday evening the senior class of the Astoria High School en tcrtaincd with an Easter party given in Logan's Hall. The patronesses on this occasion were Mrs. A, D. Garner, Mrs. A, E. Hammcrstrom, Mrs Herman Wise, and Mrs. J. A. Fulton The hostesses were Miss Fulton and Miss Hammerstrom. There was large crowd present indeed, the hall being taxed to its utmost capacity to accommodate those attending. Th young ladies of the High School strv ed refreshments in the adjoining room) The decorations were very ar tistic, consisting of pennants front the different universities and colleagues of the United States. A number of musical selections were rendered by Prof. Enna of Portland, Mrs. John T, Allen, Miss Dorris Hocfler, Mr. W, F. Gratke, Miss Bess Reed and Miss Alice Wood. At the close of the pro gram, dancing was engaged in until midnight the Pacific orchestra fur nishing excellent music. LABOR TROUBLE.
