PORTLAND, April 24. -Offers posted at, the Board of Trade today indicated a weaker butter market. One trader offered 5(X) pounds of butter at 16c, which found a taker, and another offered 2000 pound of fancy creamery at 221c. In the city creamery trade the market was con sidered about steady, while in the Front street market it was conceded that stock were piling tip." Dealers in country brands were beaish, in their views of the market. A further de cline is, likely to take place soon. Poultry arrivals today were not large but the demand was not suf ficient to take all offering readily and the market wore a rather weak appearance. Some shipping orders that came in helped to move stocks to some extent but the local Inquiry was not strong. Sales for the most part were made at yesterday's prices. There was a slightly firmer felling In the egg trade today. Receipts were comparatively liht and there was a fair dmand for Oregon goods on the Sound.. His visit might have been saved by a timely dose of Lane's Family Medtef-e, MEDICAL FALLACIES. Some Fanciful Notions About Boils and Fevers. "The fanciful notion that a breaking out of boils, pimples or other erup tion rids the system of poison is firm ly rooted In the minds of ninety-nine of every hundred persons," said a pby slclan the other day. "When any one has a large boll . or carbuncle bis friends tell him it la good for him be cause 'It lets out all the bad -blood.' There la as little reason la this as there is in the remarks attributed to a tenement bouse mother to her instruct or in the hygiene of children. 'Miss Brown she said, -well, seein' that I've burled ten, 1 don't see as no one has any call to tell me how to rare up ba bies, 'spesuly some one as never tared up any of her own. "As a matter of fact boils, carbun cles aud similar eruptions are collec tions of germs aud pua and not blood diseases, whose origin is usually at the location found. A sweat gland be comes clogged with germs and dirt, a hair turns in w ith its numerous bacte ria, or, as is tbe, case of the so called 'bone felon,' the germs are scratched in with the point of a file or by chip ping the matrix of the finger nail. Wherever there are swelling, redness, beat and pus you may be sure there germs will be found. "Boils do not mean impoverished blood and are not a blood disease, al though popular opinion, fostered by some medical men, would so Indicate. Infections on the skin such as those mentioned, eczema, the Itch, barbers' Infection, ringworm and many others have absolutely no connection with the blood or internal conditions. They are akin infections, pure and simple, and aa a rule do not influence one's general health favorably or otherwise. Here once more the popular supposition of 'better out thnulu' is Illogical and un supported by the facts. "Mothers who give children with measles and other eruptive diseases home remedies to 'bring out the rash' do harm in many unseen way's. The worst and most fatal cases of measles, scarlatina and smallpox are those with the dark red eruptions the well named 'black' measles, scarlatina and small pox. "There are very few today who still cling to the old method of withholding water .from the burning, dry, parched lips of the fever stricken. Yat who of us still living .fails to recall the tor tures inflicted upon the thirsty suffer er with pneumonia, typhoid or other burning malady? "It has been finally demonstrated as a perpetual truth that water internally and externally is the best antipyretic known. Cold water administered In ternally in unlimited amounts Is the Ideal fever reducing agent It Is harm less, desired by the sufferer, reduces the temperature, dilutes the toxins, re places the destroyed fluids and washes out the bacteria and accumulated waste products. The antipyretic drugs, however, oiv nil depressant to the heart destructive to the blood cells aud injurioi-s. to the other organs." Baltimore Si:n. First National Bank of Astoria, Ore.
