The Portland-Eureka packet, Eu reka, was in Coos Bay when the steamer Alliance left out for this port and Portland, and it was under stood that she was not 'coming furth er north this trip as she had nothing in the way of freight for any point north, of Coos. She went back to) Eureka to take a fresh start. The steamer F. S. Loop arrived in this harbor yesterday at 1 o'clock, from Tillamook Bay where she had loaded on 100,000 feet of lumber. Kelly mills at Warrenton, and 200.000 feet at the Clatsop mills dock, before going over to Knappton to finish her outward cargo. She is covering a "good many eggs" in this deal, but all the same she will "hatch" out a smashing good ship ment before she goes over the Co lumbia bar. Consideraing the jam she got trom the St. Helen's this is pretty good news and indicates that she was well taken care of for the voyage. The Lurline has fallen right into her old trick of meeting her sched ule in and out of this port, and is do inr her old-time business stunt daily. A FISHERMAN'S IDEA. Communication Filed for Publication in These Columns by a Party in Interest The following communication was filed in this office yesterday with the request that it be published, a favor irrantcd without specihc comment. "In commenting on the mass meet ing of the citizens of Astoria for the ,,rnre of fish legislation tnrougn the initiative and referendum, there is no doubt but it is a move in the right direction. But, after hearing tne rea son whv most of the cannerymen did not donate to the fund before, was that they had come to the conclusion that Mr. Rosenberg did not have tne matter as much at heart as one who is engaged in fishing for salmon. r As it looks much as if this movement was so late as to endanger the wel fare of this industry and therefore the packers were opposed to putting up money in the hands of Mr. KosenDerg, who has shown by the selection 01 his committee geographically, and their consoicuousness at the mass meeting by the absence of the people on the committee outside of Astoria, that the only interest taken in the matter was by the people of Astoria whom he had to call to the rescue, as we heard no report from the presi dent or any officers of the salmon as- ociation. So at this time we do not care to' jeopardize the fighting repu tation of 'Bob Evans,' until we see the outcome of this battle, which in our estimation would have been an easy one if it had been properly managed.
