All in for the "Big Show." The greatest aggregation of wild and untainted talent ever gathered to gether for one occasion will be on exhibition at the Astoria Theatre, Monday and Tuesday, March 30 and 31. One price admits to all and every ticket of admission entitles the holder to a valuable prize. Nothing like this effort has ever been seen here before and the Mayor and Chief of Police have issued a manifest or dering every man, woman and child in this vicinity to attend and receive 350 hearty laughs in 135 minutes. Be on hand early and avoid the rush." Costumed in clothes that will fair ly holler, backed by costly scenery and an augmented orchestra, sur rounded by glittering electrical effects, the Elks' Grand Company of minstrel performers will fairly shout melody across the footlights and the come dians wil entertain with merry jest in one grand imposing melodious out break. Preparations are moving with enthusiasm and vigor and what will undoubtedly prove to be the greatest entertainment ever given in the local theatre, will be the result of all this activity among the Elks. the chairman of the local Rose" Festi val Committee, Mr. Lamar, that t he rould be present W briefly tell the members personally about the ', ar rangements that are being made, for this big entertainment. The brick and terra cotta proposition under the, di rection of Mr. Ogan is progressing satisfactorily and it is probable that he will have quite a large number of small preliminary samples to exhibit before the members, Thefciln will be put in operation next week if pos sible when the actual tests will be made in commercial siaes. A number of matters of an executive nature are to come up for consideration and the outlook for the year, Manager Whyte says, is highly satisfactory and encouraging. Speaks For Itself. Astoria, Or., March 23rd. Editor Astorian: In the last issued of a local paper appeared an item in which it stated that John Nolan had been in certain precincts circulating a oetition for W. C. A. Fohl for county coroner, and number of people thoueht it referred to me. I have not circulated any petition for Mr. Pohl for coroner or any other person. I ask that this be published to set me right before the public. JOHN F. NOWLEN. "CHARLIE" CALLENDER, Who Has Quit the Mines to Appear With the Elks. When "Charlie" Callender saw Sen ator "Bill" Scholfield's picture in the "Astorian" the other morning, pro fessional jealousy got the better of him and he protested strongly to the committee. He claimed to be a much better comedian than "Bill" and want ed his picture put in the paper. To pacify him and keep peace in the com pany, the director told him to have his picture taken for publication with the result that a splendid likeness of him adorns this article. Just as the photo grapher pressed the button, poor Charlie burst into tears, and the camera caught the sad expression which is depicted above. Notice the agony in his eyes, and the drop of his cupids-bow mouth. If you look carefully you can see the tears cours ing down his rosy red cheeks. How ever, everything has been arranged to his satisfaction and he has been prom ised a milk bath and the stars' dress ing room. "Charlie" is one of the shining lights in the company and will be seen n all his peistine beauty on both nights of the show. 4 C C C C CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Meeting Monday Evening When Im portant Matters Will Come Up. The regular meeting of the Cham ber of Commerce will take place at 7:30 o'clock prompt Monday evening, this being the last of the meetings of the winter season to begin at that hour with the first meeting' in April the hour of assembly will be 8 o'clock. A representative of the Rose Festival Association of Portland has notified TRAFFICKING IN OLD HORSES Horrible and revolting to the ex treme is the traffic in old worn-out horses reirularly caried on between Ensland and the Netherlands, ending with the final scene in which the most useful and human of all domestic an imals is served up on a platter in the form of so-called Bologna sausage and filet d'anvers. The sufferings of the horses are the most intense during the passage from England to Rotterdam on shipboard. Tied up in roughly constructed stalls between decks, they are at the mercy of the storms, and in many instances are thrown into tangled heaps on top of one another. All that sur vive are dragged from this tangled heap to start the miserable proces sion through the streets to the slaughter house, their most unsightly wounds covered with sacking. A picture of old horses tethered in the hold of a vessel accompanies an arti cle on the subject in the, April num. ber of Popular Mechanics. CLASSIFIED SITUATION WANTED. It was a dark and gloomy night; the noonday sun shone brightly on the lovely asphalt pavements of As toria. Just then a soul-stirring thing happened! Approaching on the feet o fthe wind was Belinda, the beautiful boilermaker! In hot pursuit thunder ed Relentless Rudolph, the Remorse less Ruffina. "He! Ha!" cried he, between his clenched teeth. "At last you are mine," and with one wild plunge he seized her lovely form in his grasp. With their breath coming in short pants, they heaved mightily, back and forth, and suddenly, with one superhuman effort, Beautiful Be linda freed herself from the ferocious fiend . '"Unhand me villian,' she cried, in accents wjld. "Give me, oh give me back me-h chee-ild. I will never be your bride. I am promised to an other." The furious Relentless Ru dolph laughed with ghoulish glee and as he started towards her said. "Wherefore, O beauteous maiden, wilt thou not marry me." A. Howell, of Havana, Cuba, Recommends Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. "As long ago as I can remember my mother was a faithful user and friend of Chamberlain's Cough Rem edy, but never in my life have I real ized its true value until now, writes Prof. H. A. Howell, of Howell's American School, Havana, Cuba. "On the night of February 3rd our baby was taken sick with a very severe cold, the next day was worse and the following night his condition was desperate. He could not lie down and it was necessary to have him in the arms every moment. Even then his breathing was difficult. I did not think he would live until morning. At last I thought of my mother's remedy, Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, which we gave, and it afforded prompt re lief, and now, three days later, he has fully recovered. Under the cir cumstances I would not hesitate a moment in saying that Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and that only, taved the life of our dear little boy." For ale by Frank Hart and leading drug gilts.
