A concert and dance will be given by the Uppertown National Band this (Saturday) evening in the Na tion Hall, Uppertown. The concert will commence at 8 o clock. Whytc, of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by Mr. Wmgatc, a pro minant member of that organization, with several reporter, met the train and boarded the elegant coach ot tne traffice manager, with friendly greet ings and a cordial invitation to the party to remain over for a day and take careful note of what of interest Astoria might have to show them; but it seemed the trio were bent on reaching the government jetties un der prior arrangement mauc tor them with the officials there by Sup erintendent John McGuirc, of the A. & C. road, and were compelled to de cline all offers of the kind. An attempt wa made to get them to dron off on their return to the city laot evening, but again President Clark urged the imperative necessity of his being in Tacoma this morning so the hone of securing their pre sence here, if only for a few Hours, was lost; and after exacting a pro mine to make a visit to this city at an early day. the party was permitted to pas on its way, much to the regret of all concerned. All hands in the official party in nistcd that the trip had no partic ular significance, and was taken merely to give President Clark and Mr. French some definite idea of the country traversed by the A & C, a dependency of the Northern Pacific, and for what of enjoyment could be extracted from the rip Court Session Closed The County Court of Clatsop County held a brief and final session for February, yesterday morning, and i hen adjourned. The only business transacted was a follow: A con tract was closed with Birch & Jacob- son, in the sum of $3812.60 for the needed repair on the Young's Bay bridge, and for the putting in of new sway braces there, for the sura ot $210. with the same firm.. This wa done after a review of the bide sub mitted by Ferguson & Houston, John Mattson and Alexander Lebeck, in the same behalf. Some minor road matters were then disposed of, being carried over to the ensuing term. The minute of the previous regu lar meeting were read and approved. The clerk' reoort for January showed the total amount of business for the month of January to have been in the sum of $3931.70. Total cash col lections for the same period were $4019.95. The treasurer's statement for the month ending January 31 showed a balance on hand in the general fund of $29,929.42. The renort of the assistant superin tendent wa read and placed on file. The regular pay roll for January amounted to $574.50 was ordered paid. Bills for the month of Janu ary amounting to $102.91 were or dered paid. A petition from the property own ers requesting the board to place a hydrant at the crossing of Alameda and Ilwaco avenues was read and referred to the superintendent to pa upon the practicability of the propo sition. The discount rate to manu factories was chanced to apply in the future only on the amount of water used in excess of 122.000 gallons. WASHINGTON, Feb. 7.-The ses sion of the House today was devoted almost entirely to the consideration of the omnibus war claims bill. which was passed after considerable discussion. It carries a total appro priation of $315,000. A ripple of ex citement was caused by Macon, who in the course of the debate defended the Senate what he said were asper sions cast on that body by Payne of New York, when he prcdicter that the Senate would load the bill down with a number of unmeritorious claims. A number of private bills were also passed. The House ad journed until Monday. WRECKAGE FOUND. SAN FRANCISCO. Feb. 7.-The Merchants Exchange has recemi word that the beach patrol at Car- manah Point, Vancouver Island, re ports having found a quantity of wreckage, including part of a cargo of lumber. The vessels name board was marked "Santa Clara" and a double ended boat inscribed "M. B. Stock, builder." The coast steamer Santa Clara is now at Seattle. FURNACE RESUMES. CHICAGO, Feb. 7. Announce ment was made yesterday that the plant of the Federal Furnace Com pany at South Chicago would re sume operations February 20.
