Contractor Miller used to run a lodging house on Bond street during his wife's lifetime but latterly he has sublet it His lat tenants, to say the least, proved unprofitable. The understanding was they were to buy it out, and the first payment of $50 was to be made on the first inst. Meantime Mr. Miller took sick and went to the hospital. On Thursday he got out and on the same day M. and Mp. Grant Anderson took the Volga for Chinook and incidentally about a wagon load of Mr. Miller's bedding, including blankets, sheets and quilts. Xels Anderson rfell cut of a skiff last night about 8 o'clock while trying to board a scow, and was drowned in about four feet of water. Anderson had been drinking and was not very steady on his feet or the accident would never have resulted fatally. lie was known to be one of the best swimmers on the river. District Forecaster E. A. Beal hat placed an exhibit in hi office for the purpose of conveying to ship captains the proper method of placing their thermometers and barometers in order to get the best results from the instru nients. The exhibit show just how they should be hung and exposed. July 8 the four-masted schooner Resolute went ashore near Dungenes light station, according to a message received by the lighthouse official this morning. The information came from Keeper A. Brooks, who is stationed at that point. The schooner wa bound from Puget Sound for San Pedro with a cargo of lumber. The Lurline did not get in till three o'clock this morning which only make her about 10 hours late. As a rule by Friday she is only about 7 or 8 hours late, but this week she overran her ehedule a little. The freight up the river accumulates o rapidly that ser iouslv the l.urline has an excuse. Thin morning she brought 10,000 feet of lum ber for fish barrel heads for Ilrookfleld, besides two carloads of shingle ifor the buoy station. Hoday the Undine will meet the Lurline half way on her re turn trip (or maybe at Tongue Point) and will transfer cargoes, so that the latter may recover her schedule. The steamer Yosemtte cleared for San Pedro yesterday. She had a cargo of '.100,000 feet of lumber loaded at Pre cott. Rainier, Linnton and Tongue Point. The tug Dauntless came in yesterday for the big Benson log raft, which she will tow to San Diego. Tlie two-masted schoone Abide is in from San Francisco. She U bound for Iluiiiie.. The United State cruiser Charleston will be down at 3 o'clock this afternoon when the Mayor and reception commit tee will board the vessel and welcome Admiral Swinburn and his officers and crew. The oil tank steamer Atlas came in yesterday and tied up at the Standard Oil Company's wharf. She had 2000 barrels of oil for Astoria, and in all her cargo consisted of 10,700 barrels. The Breakwater came in yesterday on her firt return trip from Coos Bay. She had a large quantity of freight and a goodly number of passengers. The schooner Evie was at the O. R. 4 X. yesterday ifrom Tillamook loaded with cases of salmon. The Sue If. Elmore goes out at six o'clock today. The steamship Columbia came In yes terday from San Francisco. She carried almost her limit in passengers and had a large cargo of general freight. Apart from prevailing northwest winds, which delayed her somewhat, she had a good trip up. The gasoline boat Red Buoy built by Wilson Bros, of Astoria, is now in the water and about to depart for Belliug- ham. The official returns of her meas urements were filed at the custom house yesterday. She is 50 3-5 feet long, 12 2-5 feet wide and her registered depth is 3 1-5 ifeet. Her tonnage is 14 gross and 10 net, The boat is owned by the Pacific American Fisheries of Bell ingham, Wash., and Ralph Oakley is now in Astoria to take her over there. The Redondo gill go out on her next trip Tuesday morning for Seattle. She will make connections there with the steamer Pleiades which sails for Nome and other points in Alaska.
