Friday Club- Mrs. Robert Cnruthers entertained the Friday Club this week. At cards the prise winners were Mrs. Broad water and Mr. Welch. Mrs. Morse won the visitor's prise. The parlors were daintily decked with spring flowers and the wild huckleberry foliage. Friday Afternoon- Mrs. Wlngate entertained the Friday Afternoon club this week. Announcement- Sir. Benjamin Toung announces the engagement of his daughter, Caroline Charlotte to Mr. William Prescott Ogilvle. And therein is told In formal brevity, the culmination of a charming ro mance, in which the center of Interest is one of the most beautiful young women of Astoda fair, winsome Miss Carol Toung, and Mr. William Pres cott OgUvte, nephew of Sir John Ogilvle, and lawyer and athlete of Van couver, B. C. Mr. Oirilvio graduated from Mc- Gill's law school at Montreal two years ago, and has since served the term of law under the rules of the court In Canada. While in Montreal two years ago. Mr. Ogilvle won for himself marked athletic honors at discus in which he broke the record t that time and' has held it ever since. And In Seattle, three weeks ago, won the silver) cup for the shot put Sir John Ogilvle, uncle of the lively young barrister, was sent to Alaska to adjust boundary line difficulties. Afterwards he went to England to make his report which so pleased Queen Victoria that she knighted Sir Ogilvle. Mr. William Prescott Ogilvle has visited Astoria on several occasions. The announcement, which was a surprise to even Intimate friends was made at the meeting of the D. M. C. D. Club which Miss Woung entertained on Wednesday, and on the next after noon, when the xnursaay ciuo was entertained by Mrs. Charles Callendar. The marriage will occur sometime in August Euchr Club Tho Euchre Club was entertained by Mrs. Brenham Van Dusen. At cards, the prises were won by Mrs. C. W. Fulton and Mr. P. A. Stokes. Bridg, Club Tils Bridge Club has been reorgan ised. The club numbers two tables. This week Mrs. Will Tailent and Miss Harriet Tailent entertained. Schroder-Miller- Monday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. M. A. Schroder. In East As toria, Miss Johanna Schrocder and Mr. Harry Miller were married quietly by the Rev. H. D.' Chambers, of Port land, by the beautiful ritual of the Episcopal church. Miss Hilda Ander son was bridesmaid, and Mr. Frederick Hedges bestman. Samuel and Chris Schmidt He Is looking over the fishing, Industries on the Pacific Coast and Is accompanied by his wife and son. It is the inten tion of Mr. Schmidt and family to re main in Astoria for a few days, being favorably impressed with the city. The teachers' institute, which will be held on the 24th, 25th and 2t8h, is a much-talked of event, and will call Into service quite widely the local talent, on Jthe evening of the 25th when there will be presented In the Methodist church a musical program. Prominent educators of Oregon are to be present among whom are State Superintendent Akerman and Miss Marvin, the librarian, f;om Salem. The institute will be held in the Shlvely school. Evening Fa-ewell On Wednesday evening Mrs. Skyles entertained In honor of the near departure of Mrs. Rober and Mrs. Broadwater. A number of friends spent a very delightful evening. Six handed euchre was played at which Mrs. Holt and Mrs. Rober were f7.e, winners. Next Wednesday evening Mrs. Jen nie Busey will give a reception at her residence on Franklin avenue, to the visiting educators who will be here during the week, attending the Institute. Birthday The birthday of Miss Lelah Gilbaugh was celebrated Monday evening by an informal surprise party given Miss Gilbaugh at her home. The small party spent a most enjoyable evening congratulatory to the young hostess. MIbs I.elah received some very beau tiful gifts, among which was a box of cut flowers in which there were three dozen choice roses. Skating Party The skating club gave their long postponed party at Seaside this week, a party of about 50 going down from Astoria. The new hall at Seaside, Mrs. Donerberg entertained the Clover Club at its regular meeting on Tuesday. Mrs, I Moore will leave Monday for Corvallls where she will spend the summer visiting relatives. Mrs. Wyard, her daughter, will accompany her. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schmidt, of New York, are here as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schmidt, for a few weeks, Mrs. T. A. Hyland and the Misses Boelllng are to leave soon for a tour of the eastern states, returning by way of Jamestown, where they will attend the exposition. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fisher have re turned to the city for the summer. James Robb has left to join his father In the mining business In Nevada. The Taylor-street school which gave an entertainment last week, took In $150. The Japanese drill was done by tho pupils of Miss Alice Goddard was one of the most striking and pretty features of the evening, and much credit Is due this young teacher for her skillful training. The school will give another benefit for the piano fund before the close of the term and the remainder of the sum needed has been guaranteed.
