The steamship Columbia arrived in at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, from San Francisco, with a good crowd in her cabin and lots of stuff between deck. She wa-i in great luck entering; the fog lifted for about 10 minute a she ap proached the bar, long enough .to give her bearing.. and on she came. . She left up for Portland at noon. - The steamer Despatch arrived from San Francisco at 4 o'clock p. m. yester day, and passed on to Portland. , At noon yesterday tliere was a fleet of ten windjammers off the Columbia bar, with as many more vessels, sail, and steam, on the inside. It is thought conditions will be easier both ways, to day. The. powerful San Francisco tug Dauntless booked on to her tow, the bark Roderick " Dhu, yesterday at 3 o'clock p, m. and dropped to the lower bay, to be ready for the early flood this morning. The Lurline came to her dock here at 4 p. m. yesterday. She created quite a bit of astonishment geting in here in broad daylight again. She went up at 7 o'clock well fixed with people and freight The steamer Shamrock was reported bard and fast ashore at a point midway between the federal quarantine station and Knappton, on the Washington shore, yesterday afternoon; she got away for her Astoria berth on the night tide. and brought down two heavy log-raft for the Simpson mills at Knappton. Purser Charles M. Fowk of Ue steamer Lurline, is adrift on a two week's furlough, lie will upend it at Seaside, where he can rvt, sure enough; "far from the maddening crowd," and undisturbed by "ship that pas in the night" and day too. Ha i a devoted worker and entitled to a jolly and re freshing outing. The British steamship Aginoourt left down from Portland yesterday. She i grain laden for Moji. and draws 24.7 feet, a draught, that may kp her in the lower harbor for several day. The. steamship Olympia is still on the hither side of the Columbia bar. awaiting feasible conditions in which to proceed to sea. The big Xumantia had a rough trip over from China. She was 17 day and IS hours en route, and passed through two cyclones on the voyage. She was in half cargo and this made her very sus ceptbile to the heavy ami continuously rough sea. Captain Archie Peae came down from Portland on yesterday's train to meet her and pilot her to Port land. Slie went on up last night. She crossed in over the bar at 4:30 yester day evening, and will load grain out ward for the Orient. Jack Shea, master of the San Fran cisco tug Dauntless, up here as the con sort of the bark Roderick Dhu, is no stranger in thee waters, having spent some years in the fishing industry here. He was welcomed by many friends dur ing his brief stay in port. 4 PERSONAL MENTION. Deputy Collector of Customs F. L. Parker has returned from Gray's Harbor whither he went on business. Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Hagen. of Ho- quiam, Washington are in the city. Mr. Hagen is one of the foremost lumbermen of the Evergreen State. G. L. Harper, business manager of the Georgia narper Company was in the city yesterday, conferring with Manager Selig of Fisher's Opera House, for the initial engagement of his company here. There wa a small attendance at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening, and little outside of rou tine business wa transacted. A controversy over the merit of tlie jeUy and thri dnslge, waa provoked when Judge J. A. Ilowlby introduced a resolution urging Congress to ap prtqiiiate funds to continue the work of the jetty, to save money already in vested, Captjuiu Gurtdijson, the bar pilot wanted to amend the resolution to contain a clause providing that the dredge Chinook be returned to service, pending the construction of the jetty. The amendment, however, failed to car ry, but a separate resolution was pass ed, asking Senator Fulton to take the necessary steps to bring alsmt the re turn of the dredge to the bar. Judge ltowlhy's resolution follows: "Whereas, much money has been in voted in the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia river, and the improvement i in such condition that there is danger of great damage and injury to it, should the work stop now for a year or les, thereby requiring much expeudl ture of money to bring the improvement bilk to its present condition; and, ' Whnieas the rapid growth and in crease of the commerce on the Colum bia river demands, that the jetty be maintained to it present proficiency and fur beyond, therefore he it, "Ke-olved, That Congress be respect fully urged to make the ue.esary ap propriation thi winter to continue the work on the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia river without intermission." Introducing his amendment, Captain GundiTson stated that in one year the dredge would accomplish more good than the jetty in a life time. lie fur ther contended that if dredging was not Of Interest to Clergy.
