A recent nimber of die Oregnnian contained a symposium in which a score or more of Portland successful men told how they made their first one thou sand dollars. It- was all very interest ing, but more interest would attach to the story of how some of their more recent thousand dollar clean-ups have been made. Olympian. Hoar, hear. is possible that the postofttcv. depart ment will immediately adopt measure, perhaps, of an iusistent nature, to bring about conciliation between the belliger- jents. For all these reasous we hope the 'present strife will l shortlived and that (within a few day at the utmost dis- patches will carry new of the capitula tion of either the railway companies or the telegraphers, , Astronomer Camille Flarnmarion's plan, which he will present to the French chamber of deputies making a new calendar, which will be perpetual, has some good point about it, but, even though the French, who are al ways attracted by something new and different, should adopt it, it fa hardly likely to take the place of the Gregorian calendar, becaue nations are conserva tive about such things. The proposition ha some reasonableness in it favor, as it makes the year begin at the ver nal equinox, March 21, and spring is considered the natural opening of the year. Every quarter would contain two I months of 30 day and one of 31 days. This would make a twelvemonth 3t4 days long, and the inventor propose to provide for the 315.1th day by making it a fete day, not to be counted in any month. This would give two fete days every leap year. It would also bring the same dates on the same day of the week every year and thus obviate new calculations. There is more reaason In 31. Flarnmarion's plan than in the re adjustment of the calendar made at the time of the French revolution, when the week was made to conit of ttn days, the decimal craze beinj? then at its height. The year consisted of 12 months of 30 day each, leaving five dav at IN LIGHTER VEIN FEMININE INTUITION. Smith (reading paper) What fools some men do make of themselves! These superfluous days were put at the end of the last imvth, known as "complimentary days," and g.'ven to fes tivity. But the ten-week days proved too long for human endurance. The system lasted only 12 year, from 1793 to 180j, when the empire finally restored the Gregorian calendar, which is gen erally considered by scientist to get a near to astronomical facts as human ingenuity can arrive. The telegraphers strike of operators on the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railways is on and bids fair to bring serious suffering to the various element which are, In a measure, af fected by the walkout. Two' thousand men have left their telegraph keys, traf fic on both railways is demoralized to a material extent and in some instance entire division are utterly blocked. General 3Ianager Horn's, of the Northern Tacific, ultimatum, to the operator, planned as a "lockout," has resulted in a "walkout." The condition of affair is convincing that the statement of road officials to the effect that the place of operator who chose to leave the err ice could immediately be filled from among the ranks of non-union telegraph er now appear to hate been made in a braggadocio manner. To attempt to maintaui either road on the prevailing pchedule will be risky. The demands of the telegrapher, so far as can be learned, unofficially, are to be consid ered reasonable. On the other hand, there is 'none who know better than General Manager Horn, of the Northern Pacific, or the head of the Great North em, the reason for refusing to comply with the request of the operator". Our attention is at one turned to the people who will suffer the most from the effect of the strike even though we, at the same time, give the contentions of both the railway and the operators studious consideration. The tying up of these two great transcontinental railway will practically suspend the operations of some of the country's largest com mercial concern who transport great SHE.
