That they have not succeeded is due largely to the fact that there has been a woeful lack of organization. The Chamber of Commerce was organ ised years ago for the purpose of fur thering the interests of the city. This body has done a great deal of good for Astoria, but the scope of iu operations haa been so necessarily , broad, .that with the limited support it bai been W corded, hi suoeeasea haw likewise beet)1 limited. Every merchant in the city t':ouM lc a member of the Chamber. He should not only tender his moral, but his ' monetary support. . Meeting should be attended regularly and every member should display an active inter eat in what transpires. Are we not to accept the success of commercial organizations- in other communities as a cri terion? . ik at Saa Francisco with its Men-ham' association. On the book of that body are, enrolled the names of thousands. Look at the Chamber of Commerce in Loa Angeles. " Thia body has -erected a splendid stone edifice in which. are housed exhibit from every community. ; in Southern Cabfornia. Study the small towns of 3,000 and 4.000 people in California. Each main tains its Board of Trade or its Chamber of Commerce, and the most unpreten tious of these small communities can boast of its exhibit room. The fact that California stands at the head of all commonwealths in the entire Amer iean union may lie traced primarily to the maintenance of these numerous and very efficient commercial organizations, and secondarily to the efforts of indi viduals. These are truths. They must tie considered ' and seriously. Give, the Chamber of Commerce every possible assistance. Let tlie salmon canneries ontribute samples of their products for a suitable exhibit, speciniens'of our tim lier and mill products should be obtain ed from lumbering concerns, agricultural products from the farmers and ,even models of craft from the boat builders Every industry of Astoria should be creditably represented at the Chamtiejr of Commerce. With these display as sembled and an apartment obtained by the Chamber for th'ir exhibition,; then when we "get the people if they are of the '"show-me' kind, Astoria can show tliem. , , . . 0 WORLD'S XAVAL .STRENGTH.
