Captain Ooodaie, Quartermaster, Astoria, Oregon, Condition fti West Especially HatlMl'actory Owing; to Heavy Crop and flood Prices of Farm Product. New York, Aug. 12. Reports to the International Mercantile Agency from commercial center Indicate increased attribution of merchandise at the west and south, with excellent outlook for a brlak fall trade. Adverse factors, such as strikes and crop damage, while curtailing local buainess In some parts of the country, have not been gen erally effective. Interfering little with busineas as a whole. For these rea sons, the outlook is encouraging, al though trade Is apt to remain quiet until after election, when the outlook for the fall will be more discerned. Conditions In the west are especial ly satisfactory. Jobbers in dry goods. clothing, shoes, men's and women's ap parel are preparing for a heavy fall business. Advance orders are satis factory and the outlook is regarded as encouraging. Increased travel to 8L Louis Is stimulating trade In dis tricts tributary to that center, with the result that wholesalers are booking larger orders than usual. In territory affected by the excitement over the reported Injury to wheat certain branches of business bav shown sorn falling off. although the decrease has not been Important or very much be low the volume in sight at this date a year ago. The south shows, up welt, with re ports of excellent business at Louis ville and surrounding country, which appears to be unusually prosperous. Dry goods In that section hold firm with few price changes and collections satisfactory. Although quiet, the boot and shoe Industry shows a heavier movement than last year, and Increased orders for manufactured tobacco Indi cate strong conditions in the trade. More abundant rains In Texas have Improved the outlook in that state, which report M&tlMfactory demand for wholeaale hardware, dry goods and grocerlea. Salesmen for Baltimore houses ahow- satisfactory results and jobbers in that section look for an In creased number of buyers in the fall. Collectlona In that territory are re ported to be only fair with some con cern over the outlook In clothing branches. Pittsburg reports a revival of hope in the Iron trade dut to better inquiry for deliveries and gradually stiffening prices.. Far reaching disturbance is not expected to follow the cut In billet prices which one producing concern this week promulgated and unless un foraeen obstacles are encountered there will be disruption of the so-called bit let pool. Conditions In general con firm the reassurance derived from the Iron Age's summary of July pig Iron production, showing a falling off of 209,236 tons for the month. Owing to the Interference of the lake strike coal tonnage Is very heavy with Indications that the decrease in shipping business may be made good. What It Coats. Modern naval warfare is one of the most costly things that can be imag ined and a combat between two fleets means the expenditure of vast sums of money. Some Idea of the high cost can be arrived at by taking a Japanese warship like the Kasuga or Nyashin and calculating the number' of shots she would discharge, say, at Port Ar thur. The first named ship carries four cannon which cost $30,000 each One of these guns can fire two shots per minute and every shot costs $400; thus In Ave minutes these four cannon can discharge forty bombs at a. cost of 216.000. The smaller cannon cost each $18,000 and every shot they Are means an expenditure of $70. They are very rapid and It Is estimated that In five minutes the twelve cannon could discharge shot to the value of nearly $35.000. Leslie's Weekly.
