SLIGHT LETUP IN THE BLOW Alliance Can Not Leave Out Becaasr of Bad Bar at Coot Bay Record Whtat Cargo Coming on Bark Andorinha. There was a slight letup in the atorm yesterday, and the bar waa not so rough an was the case the previous duy. . However, none ot the weather-bound vessels managed to get to sea, although one coaster arrived In port. The Inst report from the Heads conveyed the Information that the bar waa rough and that a SS-knot wind waa kicking up a choppy sea. : Nothing waa report ed off the Heads during the day ex cept the solitary craft that ran into the harbor. The weather-bound fleet is made up principally of lumber carriers, ot which there are several in the lower harbor. The steamer Alliance ia also tied up at her dock here, and has been for sev eral days. She ! would experience no difficulty in getting to sea from Astor ia, but Captain Hardwick must reckon with conditions at Coose bay, where he must touch on his way down the coast to San Francisco. Reports from Coos bay are to the effect that the bar there ia breaking badly, and the Al . liance could not get into the harbor ' If she started from Astoria yesterday. Captain Hardwick must wait till condi tions are favorable at the coast port before departing from Astoria, He has a large number of passengers aboard and they are somewhat anxious to start south, but must1 wait until the Coos bay bar settles down. The tnly vessel to reach port yes terday waa the steamer Aurella, which came in during the forenoon. She has 4000 sacks ot cement for Portland and comes from San Francisco. She had rather a rough trip up the coast, but came through the blow without acci dent. BRINGS IMMENSE CARGO HERE. Indrasamaha Coming From Orient With Merchandise Worth $1,000,000. The Portland ft Asiatic Steamship Company's big liner Indrasamha sailed from Yokohama, her last port of call in the orient, last Thursday, with the largest and most valuable cargo of or iental freight ever brought to Portland. Among other freight on board the steamer Is nearly 150 carloads of the Philippine exhibit for the world's fair at St. Louis, and a consignment of silk, valued at nearly $1,000,000. The steam er Is coming direct, and Is due at Port land January 23. As there is a great bulk, as well as weight, to the consignment. It will re quire a , greater number, of .cars, than would be need for ordinary freight, and it "will require Ave special train of about 30 cars each to haul it across the continent. It will be rushed aboard these trains Immediately on arrival, and started eastward with as little de lay aa possible. This big item is not the only "special train" consignment that is coming on the big liner, for she also has aboard the largest consignment of silk ever brought to this port. It is valued at nearly $1,000,000, and for this reason will be given precedence over other freight and sent out by special express train . The entire cargo of the Indrasa mha is the largest and most valuable that has ever come to thia port. From the Philippines alone there is over 1000 tons of freight, in addition to the world's fair exhibit and the freight from Hong Kong and Japanese ports brings the total up to marly 8000 tons, valued at over $1,000,000. The Indrap ura has previously hald the record for big inward cargoes, but the one now coml ig on the Indrasamha will be sev eral hundred tons greater than that of the Indrapura. CHARTER MARKET IN BAD SHAPE No Demand At San Francisco For Grain or Lumber Carriers. According to San Francisco advices, the grainf reight market there is in a de plorable condition. Prices of grain are advancing, the rain Is continually de laved, making steadily worse the out look for the new season, while the dig engaged fleet is enormous. It totals 110,000 tons. There are but four ves sels there which are engaged to load, and all of them are now taking cargo. Tb Commercial News says that shippers refuse to make an offer for any more tonnage, and It Is not likely that any activity will prevail unleaa grain prices decline or owners are contented to ccit rate which not only pay no profit but entail heavy loaa. She Is expected to reach Astoria harbor this morning. Tha Andorinha registers S1ST tons and Is the lurgest pulling vessel that ever entered the Columbia. She like wise has the du-tlnctton of taking the greatest praln cargo ever sent out of the Columbia river. She la bound tor the I'nited Kingdom. Chang Likely to Be Mad. The determination on the part of the AstorU Chamber of Commerce to take up ttifc matter of the extension ot the harbor flttes in the east end Is gratify ing to shipping men, who feel that the present lines are not properly drawn. In view of the fact that Major Langfltt has always been reasonable with ship ping Interests of the Columbia, It Is deemed likely that he wilt appreciate the need for further extension in the east end. and that the request of the chamber will be granted. Nothing will be left undone to secure the de sired alteration. , Marin Notes. Tha Italian bark Nlnfa is still lying In the upper harbor. She la lumber ladjn for South Africa.', The steamer Prentiss got in late Tuesday night frcm San Francisco and proceeded up the river yesterday. The barkentlne Gardiner City will be towed up the river this morning. She goes to St. Helena to toad lumber. The Oregon ollot board held a reg ular monthly meeting yesterday after noon, but only routine business waa trannactsd. During the day th board renewed the branehea f Pilots A. E. Cann and Erick Johnson. The schooner Volunteer, which Is loading at Vancouver, wilt take on a cargo of SOO.000 feet of lumber. Part of the cargo will be loaded at the dock at Vancouver and the balance placed on scows and taken below the bar there, where It will be loaded onto the schooner.
