During the short period between the closing of Harvard University for the summer and the opening of the. Summer School thtU transforms the neighborhood of Harvard Square from a city of under graduates to one of teachers and ottn-r adult students, gathered from nil parts of the country, not oJle of the older buildings seems to settle down more contentedly Tnto Us vacation quiet than the old woocen house that was erected something over 175 years ago as a home for the co'!.ge presidents. The old house has a special right to Its remin iscent mood Just at this season, for it was In July, 1775, that the presence of tJeneral Washington made it the tem porary headquarters of the new born American army. It was here Indeed that the American Revolution received In first Impress as an organised mili tary resistance. Wadsworth House, as the first head quarters of the American army is now called in honor of the first Harvard president who occupied it, was known originally simply as the President's house. It was built In 1726, less than a year after the general court of Massa chusetts had voted to allow thecorpor ation of the college, Just struggling out of the difficulties of its first century, the sum of 1,000 pounds to be used In building a handsome wooden dwelling house, barn, and out-buildings "for the reception and accomolatlon of the Rev erened President of Harvard College for the time being." But $5,000 even in those days was not altogether suffi cient for the purpose and the corpora tion was compelled to add another 14, 000 before its new president had an offl cial head to shelter him. Naturally, however, it Is the military , OVER 00 LIVES LOST. Full particulars were recently receiv ed from the Samoan islands In regard to the terrible hurricane which visited those Islands and in which over 600 lives were lost. Such a loss Is appall ing, but after all Is not to be compar ed with the numbtr of persons who have lost their lives from indigestion, dyspepsia and constipation and other stomach troubles. The number liss, however, been considerably reduced since the Introduction of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, 50 years ago, because it positively cures all such ailments. Your life and health are too precious to experiment with, therefore try this famous remedy- first of all and be cured at once. It won't disappoint you.
