THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO., A LANDMARKS SOCIETY. The Native Sons and Daughters of California are actively engaged at pres ent In promoting a fund for the preser vation of the landmarks of the state. Historical altes will be marked, histori cal buildings will be preserved as far as possible, and a general interest will be aroused In the history of California. Such a movement Is worthy of the highest commendation, and of imita tion. A landmarks, society in Oregon would stimulate Interet In the history of this interesting state as no other so rlety could, especially among the young. It Is wonderful how rapidly the dust of time settles on places tnat are not aepi fresh in the memory, and In a few year sites that are eagerly sought by later lovers of history are undlscovera ble. A little care now will accomplish what much will not be able to do tn other years, and now Is the time to act Oregon should have such a soeiejy, and Astoria, one of the oldest towns in the West and one of the most Interest ins, should be the birthplace of the movement. r . One of the principal Industries of the state of Washington has been killed in a day by the action of the last legis lature. Gambling Is at a standstill. j.' EAST SWINDLING. One of the most striking features of the Eppinger failure In San Francisco is the disclosure of the soap tnat any dishonest grain man -has under present conditions in swindling the banks. Money was lent upon warehouse certi ficates, but no steps were taken to ren der it impossible, or even difficult, to present more than one certifcate for the same wheat This appears to have been the plan followed in the Eppinger case, with the result that the1 firm is short SO per cent of the amount show, by the certificates to be in the ware Jhou"8. The sacks' that remain are now plastered with the names of the va rious creditor banks that are wildly struggling to obtain possession 'of what assets there are. In view of the.,, fact that frauds of a similar nature have been perpetrated before, notably in the Chicago elevator tase, it Is astonishing that the banks should have ' permitted themselves to risk such great sums of money on such flimsy security. v ' The man who had a broken leg for which he caused every city in which he sojourned to pay roundly is now In Astoria, one of his victims, perhaps for the purpose of making an apology, says the Tacoma Ledger. If "he will not do this the authorities have hopes of get ting back the money. A man who can travel so far on a broken leg has en ergy anyhow. MISS HOSE OWENS, No. 720 Seventeenth St., "If evervtufferimr woman has the tame experience with Vine of Cardui" that I had, your medicine will be most popular. About a year ago I begin to have a worn out tired feeling with latitude, pains in the back and head wiiicli kept increasing every month. I h'-t that lauded something, but to get the right medicine was the troo- Win rf Cjtrclui Afld OflW nAA to take three bottles when I was fully re covered." ' " . 777 HEN Miss Rose Owens, who I has a responsible position in "f I the Government service at W.lnntni, D f! iWilfod tfl try Wine of Cardui, she made a wise choice. Over a million women have been relieved of female weakness by this same Wine of Cardui. It is not a strong medicine but may be taken every day in the year by any woman with benefit. It does not force results, but corrects derangements of the menstrual organs. It strengthens the nervous system, give tone to the bodily func tions, acts directly on the genital organs, and is the finest tonic for wo men known to the science of medicine. Kin Him Owns. I WINEofCARMI A3 THE CENTCRT SEES, tn the June number of the Century maajaalne. this is what is sold of the ! saluwm packing Industry. In the articles on "Th Greet Northwest": The six chief salmon-catching cen- tera on the Pacific coast, In the order of the quantity of fish packed (In MM), ,.$6 00,'we Alaska, Puget sound (British Col- umhliil. lh Columbia river, the Or iron coust,' the Washington const ami the California rivers. About four-fifths of the entire catch was tn American wa ter, one-fifth in Canadian. For their extent and Importance the annual product now being worth over 000.000. employing an army of men and millions of Qspttsil the Pacific salmon fisheries are ot surprisingly recent de velopment.;' Like every industry in the Northwest, they have seemingly sprung Into importance overnight yesterday nothing, today ' a business of world wide recognition. HEARTS OF GLASS. . It Is gravely asserted now by many newspapers, some of them of standing, that Sybil Sanderson died as the re sult of the chilly 'reception she was given by San Francisco on her last vis it to her home town. This Is all twad dle. Had we hearts of glass, they would not crack at th first chilling breath, arid nature has endowed the human race with hearts that are more likely to be too "dour" than too fragile. We know that the winter wind Is not so "unkind as man's ingratitude," but that a professional singer should go home to die because she thought her re ception was not warm enough is a pre posterous idea. ' Hearts are not made of steel, neither are they made ot glass. It has beconvs tco much the custom when a person of prominence dies to seek some more sentimental cause for his or her death than a vulgar' attack of smallpox or otrier popular disease. ( WOJTT EXPLAIN STORIES. It is perfectly plain that large fish are more apt to escape than small ones. Their weight and activity, com bined with the increased tricklne and resourcefulness of age and experience, 6f course greatly Increase their ability to tear out the hook and enhance the danger that their antics will expose a fatal weakness in hook, leader, line or red. i- Another presumption which must be regretfully mentioned arises from the fact that in many cases it is the en counter with a large fish which causes such excitement and such destruction or perversion of judgment as leads the fiiflierman to do the wrong thing or fail to do the right thing at the critical instant Grover Cleveland In Saturday Evening Post . , . 'The editor of a small paper," says the writer of the Salem Journal, "is not above reading carefully the fashion magazines, and finds according to the July Delineator the following about summer styles." Then comes some stuff about summer styles being character ized by long flowing lines, sloping shoulder effects, and quaint callers and berthas that are extremely pictur esque. We suspect the editor Is string ing up. The truth of the matter is that he just "natcherally" clipped all that talk, and would sooner go out of busi ness than carefully read a stick of it. . , Now that a man has died from sun stroke in Seattle, the Post-Intelligencer has been deprived of its principal dim mer topic for editorial treatment namely, the impossibility of any person dying from sunstroke on Puget sound. WASHINGTON, D. C. If you are a suffering wo man we would eay to you that Wine of Cardui seldom fails to completely cure any case of female ilk We say emphatically, it never fails to benefit. Every day hun dreds of sufferers are writing I to our Ladies' Advisory De partment. The letters are opened by persons compe tent to give advice. Mrs. Jones was cured by follow ing the advice which was freely given her by the .Ladies' Advisory Depart ment. Miss Owens was cured without advice by iust buying a $1.00 bottle of Wine of Cardui from her druggist and taking this great medicine in the pri vacy of her home. No doctor's ex amination, treatment or advice is nec essary. Yoo have read what thew two cured women have written. Is this not enough to lead yon to determine to be rid of suffering? August 13, 1900, Mrs. W. H. Jones, of Cameron, Mo., writes: I suffered teoibly at monthly periods for three yean. I would sometimes go for seven months with no flow at all. N ow I have my health back again and am expecting to be confined in January, I cannot praise your medicine enough." A million snfTering women have found relief in Wine of Cardui, MAJJTJtOID Made in California where materials are produced. The lowest C'ced roofing made, sts longer than all others. Ferrltt. of No. Mehoopany, Pa., made a startling test resulting In a wonderful cure. He writes "a patient was attacked with violent hemorrhages, caused by ulcera tion of the stomach, I had often found Electric Bitters excellent for acute stomach and liver troubles so I pre scribed them. The patient gained from the first, and has not hud an at tack In 14 months." Electric Bitters are positively guaranteed for Dyspep sia, constipation and kidney trouble;. WOMAN'S SYMPATHY. Is Proverbial. Astoria Women No Exception. How much we owe to the sympathetic side of womankind; When others suffer they cheerfully lend u helping hand. They tell you the means which brought relief to them that you may profit by their experience. Read the testimony given here by un Astoria woman: Mrs. Close, wife of John Close, night engineer at Ltndenberger's r"'d storage house, foot of Eighth street, residing at 230 Commercial utreet, says: "About a year ngo we moved here from Portland and as I had a great deal to look after I overdid myself, and the rmult was I brought on kidney trouble. My back began to ache and aa time rolled by It kept getting worse instead cf better. It finally grew so bad that I could scarcely stoop or straighten after Ktooplng. When .1 did any work requiring bending I could hardly get up and I had headaches, dizzy spells and at times everything before me looked blurred. ' I was just about to sturt to the store for a plaster to put on my back when I read about Doan's Kidney Pills and as they were so highly recommended for kidney trouble I made up my mind to try them and procored a box at C. Roger's drug store on Commercial street. They went right to the root of the disease and helped me from the start and be fore I had finished the box I was cured Everything is changed with me now fnd I have no, symptoms of kidney trouble whatever."
