Three Hundred Men In Chicago Car
Shops Are on Strike.
Chicago, Juno 12. Three hundred
men employed In the car shops of the
Chicago, Lake 'Shore & Eastern rail
road have gone on strike and their ac
tion threatens to tie up the South Chi
cago plant of the company. The men
want an Increase of two and one-half
per cent, which was refused.
Six hundred carpenters employed at
the Union Stock yards desired to have
their pay raised to the union scale of
60 cents, but the packers refused on the
ground that the men worked the year
round. A compromise was reached
giving the carpenters 33 cents, the high
est rate paid for similar work in any
city of the West. V ,

Cheyenne, Wyo Juue 12. The Un
ion Pacific blacksmiths at this point
have returned to work. They should
have reported last Tuesday, but mis
understood the terms of agreement.

Eastern company have been issued to
the California uockholders, but the
terms on which the plants and good
wilt of the local corporations will be
transferred have been, for the most
part settled. It le expected that
within the next fortnight all the Califor
nia pUnta will pass into the control of
the Dupont company, which, has al
ready absorbed the largest Eastern

tion for permission to build the New
York connecting railroad In Brooklyn
and Qu"en borough has been made to
the Rapid Transit commissioners' by
counsel for the Long Inland Railroad
company. The company has obtained
permission to construct a bridge over
the East river. Ward's and Randall's
Inlands, to connect with the New York, '
New Haven & Hartford railroad at
Port llorrla. This line will be a con'
nectlng link enabling the running of
trains from the Pennsylvania road by
way of the tunnel under Manhattan bl
and through to New England and all
points on Long Island. '
