For many succeeding generations tto Green Mountain dealers have had oft time umler a prohibitory law that wasn't enforced that nobody In u thorny would enforce. The privilege of selling vile "red-eye" and bad beer and good hard elder cost them nothing, Over In prohibition Maine, meantime, the llquor-dealsra have long enjoyed the benefit of the "Bangor plan' ailed the little scheme of getting fin ed lightly on a year and then going oott-free from molestation for the oth r 14 days. Bangor devised the plan. "and In Bangor it nourishes like a green fear tree. There are said to be over K4 open liquor saloons and as many more "speak-easy" bars In the "pro hibition" city of only 22.000 inhabit antsand on Thursday last the annual come up - in the- dough - dish - and- pay period began. About 50 dealers : managed to get themselves complained at for breaking the liquor law. and most of them appeared voluntarily In court and paid their fines. All classes were represented, from the proprietors ef the big hotels to the thrid-class res . taurant keepers, road-house proprietors and plain, every-day saloon-keepers. The Minimum rate of fine was 1210, no cognisance being taken of the extent f the business done, v Up to Friday night, the sum of $10,522.65 had been paid into the public treasury; and all Bangor "smiled'' In its sleeve or else where to see the continued success of Its now famous and firmly-established plan. Those two days were record breakers for liquor fines In Bangor. No wander the tax-payers protest at any effort to repeal the prohibition laws of Maine! Of course, the legislature at Augusta will go through the regular Biennial farce of debating the "resub mission" question and with the usual result. Few people in Maine really want to see prohibition knocked out of the constitution. It's too good a thing for the trade and the tax-payers in many places. The Pine Tree law-mak it look upon their brother Vermont- ers as too "soft" they didn't know a good thing when they had it. Every republican paper of note in Oregon expresses satisfaction with Sen ator Fulton's election. Even those few journal that opposed his candidacy are free to acknowledge that his selection wa the best that could have been made, -and that bis congressional car eer will be one of credit to himself and to his state. The sentiment general ly prevailing is expressed by the Pen dleton Trlbunet which says of the re- rent contest: "The election of C. W, Fulton to the United States senate be stowed an honor well deserved and fair ly vron. The victory was achieved with all the laurals of a clean, igorous fight The means by which success was final ly secured are .a credit to Mr, Fulton and the -epubllcan party of the state. Not once during the campaign was the charge of corruption or unscrupulous methods made against C. W. Fulton. He has labored many years In the in terests of the republican party and the reward is Just. That he will make -anable senator for the entire state of Oregijn everyone believe. He Is a pop ular jnm with good ability, much ex perience and general knowledge of the stfiter- He Is young and progressive and frmlllur with the needs arid am bitions fo Oregon. The press of the state is. behind bim, the good will of the people is with him. Oregon ex tends congratulations to one of its best citizens in 'winning such a high honor and hopes he may become such a sen ator that her cltissjn will have no hes itancy in returning to hlnj again, and yet again, to a place in "the highest lawmaking body in the world." The Salem Statesman, which so vig orously opposed Mr. Fulton' candlda y for the United States senate, now pleads for party harmony,' Says the Statesman: "Now that Mr. Fulton Is tlertej Unid States senator, repub licans should show a disposition to for- get past differences and pull together. The democrats are the enemy, and all the extra republican energy should be bent In thalr direction. The only po litical interest taken , in ; Oregon has beentn the fight between republicans. The result at last placed a democrat In the highest office In the state, which easily shows that It Is possible to elect more democrats even In a state which ha 15,XM republican maktrlty unless common sense prevails in party coun sels. Let us cease factional quarrels, admit that all sides should be heard and proceed to work together. Fair play and reasonable concessions are the only requisites to harmonious action The St. Helens Mist administers a deserved rebuke to the Portland dallies for their carelessness In the use of .names of prominent Orcgonlans who visit the metropolis. The Mist seems to think that there tre altogether too many strangers 'employed on the Port land papers. It rails to discover any excuse for the statement that C. J. Feinhard." county ludge of Clatsop county, to in the city, or that B. F. Cornelius "county judge of Washing ton county," is at the hotel The Mist is right; there's absolutely no excuse for such errors. Yet they occur almost dally, to the disgust of the people of the entire state. It might be well for our Portland contemporaries to em ploy .directories of the outside counties and thus insure . correct spelling of names of men wno are prominent.
