Ia the current issue of the Electrical Review is de scribed an important Invention in wire lea telegraphy by Peter Cooper Hewitt of New York City, son of the late Abram & Hewitt This device, which Is a development of the Cooper-Hewitt mercury vapor lamp, takes the place of the usual spark-gap for discharging in the antenna, or sending mask. It consits of a glass globe, eight 40 10 Inches In diameter, with two mercury electrodes contained in tubes sealed in the lower part of the globe. The de vice is very effective, and it is stat ed by this authority, will enable a much more powerful electrical wave to be set up than is possible with the meth ods at present in use and wtllalso make secrecy In transmission easily posible. Senator Wark of Canada Has Served 1 Years In Politics and Still " .' ' Serves. Frederlekton, N. B., Feb. 20. Hon. Davi'l Wark, LL.D., has entered upon the hundredth year of bis age and he claims the distinction of being the old est living legislator in the world. He Is a member of the-Canadian senate, having been called to a seat in that body of the federation of all Canada. The senator has been -longer in pub lic life than any other legislator of the present day, having spent more than 1 years in politics. He entered the New Brunswick legislature from Kent county In 1842, served eight years as a representative, then 18 years in the legislative council before becoming a senator. He was at one time receiver general of New Brunswick. Senator Wark is In excellent health. He ex pects to attend next month's meeting of the senate at Ottawa, although he will have to travel hundreds of miles to do so. - .' .. " . 1 . Waterbury, Conn., Feb. !0. Severe sentences have been dealt out to men who participated in the trolley car strike disturbances by Judge Elmor tn the superior court. Uichaled Breen was sentenced to Jail for eight months for throning stones at a trolley car. Joseph Vanase was fined $50 and ousts amounting to $106.75 for the same of fense. John Riley was fined $25 and costs for placing a rifle cartridge on the trolley track' on South Main street. Richard Moeschke was fined $25 and costs for throwing a stone at a trolley car, and Phlibert Fountain SIS and costs for a similar crime. Michale Fisher, an Italian, was fined $20 and costs for assaulting two men who rode on a car. waiter Drlesback of Nan tucket was fined 40 and costs for stone throwing.' A physician of this city has now under observation a case whkh Is the first experiment in this country with a new anlt-strepto-cocus senim, which is believed to de stroy the germs of scarlet fv-r. Several Jays ago the doctor wat cal led to sc a frail little girl, who had a severe attack of scarlet fever, with throat complication. Her temperature xsis 504 degrees. The doctor decided to try the new serum. Twelve hours after one injection the patient's tcmptrntur decreased two degrees. In the morning of the follow Ing day it decreased to normal but rose j again to 101 degrees. On' the fourth j day It continued normal. The last re- : port Is: "Temperature 99; .pulse 94; res-' plratlon 24, , and general condition: S"0Od." . v j This new serum was discovered byj Dr. Haines Aronson, a bacteriologist , of Berlin. Experiments with this new serum for scarlet fever began last Ju ly and the cases experimented on were selected regardless of severely. Eighty eight percent of those treated were dis charged as cured and their recovery was without the usual complications of scarlet fever. Pueblo, Col., Feb. 20. After an in vestigation extending over several days and during which numerous wit nesses were examlnd by the Jury em paneled to investigate the death of the four men who were fatally burned at the steel works last week has return ed a verdict charging gross negligence against the Colorado Fuel & Iron com pany. - The verdict states that the men came to their death by the overturning of a ladle of molten iron dae to the defect ive design of the ladle, which was not staple, that the defect In said ladle was known to said Colorado Fuel & "Iron company before the accident and that the officers were guilty of criminal neg ligence. The verilct caused quite a sensation. HIS DEBTS ARE MANY. Well Known Turfman Ia Overflooded With Liabilities. Chicago. Feb. 20. In ail amended pe tition filed In the United States district court, George V. Hanklns, , the well known turfman, says his debts are more than double those which ' he scheduled last November. The total liabilities of which he asks to be re lived by order of the court, amount to $314,618. His assets remain the same as before, consisting of property val ued at $11,000. The principal claims which" did not j appear in the original schedules are In : favor of holders of mortgages given in ' 1895 and 1S:'6. These amount to about! $500,000. Washlgton, Feb. 20. The war depart ment has compiled with the request made to the president and Secretary Root by Mra Ellen C. RIchter, the mother of Private Edward C. RIchter, whose death occurred in the Philip pines on February 7, 1902, under cir cumstances that led to the court mar tial of Lieutenant W. S. Sinclair, and orders have been issued that Mrs. RIch ter be furnished immediately with a copy of the court martial proceedings. Steps have been taken to have the body of the young soldier brought back ti the United States as soona this can be arranged. POLISH LEADER COMPLAINS. Present Postal System Doesn't Suit His People. Vienna, Feb. 20. The Polish leader, Dacsynskl, has complained In the relchsrath of the action of the United States postofflce authorities in not Is suing money orders in Austrian cur rency. He said that this was a serious matter. Many thousand Polish laborers in the United States, who were unable to understand the postofflce regulations were compelled to apply to bankers for drafts at great expense.
