This statement ef the Oregonlan is delib erate misrepresentation, for The Asto- rian has all along been heartily in sympathy with the undertaking. It was opposed to the special session of the legislature because It believes the Interests of the state would not be subserved by holding it, and for the further reason that the $50,000 which the session would cost could be better used as an additional contribution to the 5500,000 asked by the fair board Just such falsification as that In which the Oregonlan Indulges with reference to the attitule of this paper is what will create hostility to the fair or any legislative action in furtherance of the centennial. The Astorlan wants to do everything within reason to help the Lswis and Clark exposition, and it takes serious objection to the effort of the Portland paper to place It in a false light If the fair is not meri torious enough to be a success without a special session of the legislature, it ought to be dropped. Of course. It is plain to everyone that Portland wants not only a 1500,000 appropriation, but a United States senator as well. The Oregonian has no one to blame for this combination of politics and busi n ess but the people of its own town, and all its misrepresentation will not hide the real object of the advocates of a special session. It may be noted with gratification that the sentiment for an extra session, wen In Portland, Is dying out, for the proposal was ab solutely without merit. Oregon will do anything reasonable to help the fair, but it will not be held up by the people of Portland. The gambling problem is one that is very difficult of solution. This Is evidenced by the fact that despite the great hue and cry raised in Portland by the anti-gambling element, games are now being conducted there. In mortal ' man the desire to take a chance predominates to a greater or less extent, and until this desire shall have been outgrown there will be gambling. The worst feature of gambling is that players lose their Tfie wceHSpoi. It would seem, then, that public attention should be directed toward the obliteration of the sure-thing games. At faro and rou lette the player hits almost an even break, but at other forms of gambling a winning Is little short of miraculous. While faro, for instance, does not have a tendency to elevate the moral tone of the gambling element," It cannot be charged with the degrading Influence of the brace game. If the reform ele ment succeeds in closing all other forms of banking games than faro and roulette, It will have accomplished a great deal of good, and will have re moved the biggest temptation from those who need the moral protection of the community. It is a remarkable fact that while drunkenness Is on the decline, the vice of profanity Is not making such rapid strides in that direction. This cosmo politan community furnishes an ex cellent example of worldly ways, and those who recall the situation of It) years ago will note the striking de crease in' the number of drunkards. Then to be a "good fellow" one would necessarily have to be more or less a drunkard, whereas excessive use of liquor is no longer a qualification with this particular class of pleasure-seek era. Indeed, the drunkard has no place with them, for, as men become more intelligent, they shun those who ren der themselves irresponsible. The present-day "good fellovr' wants to associate himself with congenial com panions who are capable of bright say ings, and, while an occasional drink Is regarded as timely, drunkenness is abhorred. But there is not the same decrease in profanity, although pro gress has been made In this direction. The logical Inference Is that the world is becoming better, and that intelli gence will eventually stamp out vice. In the passing of Judge Gray As toria loses one of her best and most loyal citizens. Judge Gray had worked tirelessly for the advancement of Clat sop county and was ever true to her interests. In the face of opposition that was not creditable at all times he persisted in a good-roads movement that has given the county fine high ways, and throughout his official career had shown himself to be careful and conscientious. Scruplously hon orable, extremely energetic and loyal to his city and county, Judge Gray was a citizen whose loss will be severely felt. AN ALL ABIDING FAITH. The Illinois Central railroad com pany has an all abiding faith in the future of the great Northwest. A short time ago, this was manifested by the establishment in Seattle of an ag ency to take care their interests there. The latest effort is to put on a splen didly equipped new train service run ning between St. Paul and Chicago. The new trains will be running Sun day November 2. They will use their own rails between Chicago and Albert Lea, Minn., and the Minneapolis & St. Louis railway track from Albert Lea, to Minneapolis and St. Paul running Into the union depot at St. Paul, which is the same that Is used by all lines In that city. The train Is to be known as The Chi cago, St. Paul and Minneapolis Limit ed and will consist of sleeping car, buffet library car and reclining chair car through without chnge between Chicago and Minneapolis and St. Paul Dining car service will also be main tained, supper being served out ot Chi cago ana hreaKtast into umcago. Trains will leave St. Paul at 7:10 p. m. and arrive In Chicago 8:30 a. m. Leave Chicago at 6:10 p. m. and ar rive In St. Paul 9:40 a. m. making close connection at St. Paul with all western lines.
