The following account of the wrecked achooner Merchant la tuken from the Inst laaue of the Tillamook Headlight: The lumber schooner C. H. Merchant, which went Into Nehalem last week t- load lumber at the Nchulem Lumber Company's aaw mills, while being towed to sea lute Monday afternoon by the tug Geo. R. Vosburg, went ashore Inside Nehulem bay, on the south aplt of Nehulem bur, near where McMillan's house previously stood. It appears that when Captain Loll.-of the tug Oeo. R. Vosburg, had reached the bay with the schooner, he found the bar too rough nnd the weather too foggy to cross out. so it wns decided to put back The vessels were In the narrow channel at the time, where there Is not much room to turn. In do ing o, however, nnd at a time when the tug had no contiol over the schooner, a strong southwest wind atruck her and she went nground. stern on. The harder the tug pulled at her the faster she seemed to cling to the shore. Fortunately, the head of the schooner wns pointing out to sen, aud when the breakers struck her the portion of the vessel brok" their force for ha.l she gane broadside on she would have lost her deck load nnd would have humped to pieces In a very short time, as she Is considered a very old vessel. As soon as the Merchant struck the second mate pimped over board with n line, and every time he came up In the breakers he called out to those on hoard to play out, until all the rope was played out and he was free and at the mercy or the breakers. Fortunately for him the tide was right at the time and he battled through the breakers nnd succeeded in reach ing the show. The remainder tf the crew remained on deck, being drench ed with every sen that broke over the vessel. It waa 12 o'clock nt night be fore the crew managed to ret off, nnd the ouly accident that cornered was that one of the crew had several fin ger broken. The tug managed to keep the schooner's vend to sea, for had she gone broadside on tt ts more than probable some of the crew would have been drowned. The Merchant had 260.000 feet of lum ber on board, and It remained Intact, nnd mi effort is being made to sare It. Her keel has come ashore and the vessel l gradually sinking In the sand, where, no doubt, she will be come a total wreck. CONVENT OF THE HULY NAMES.
