Business Manager. A GOOD ROAD. UndoubteJly the greatest Improve' ment to Astoria is the Xehalem road, which l now open for the public. A perfect road In every sense of the word. It was a difficult thing some years ago to make some people realise the Importance of building this road, but now that it Is finished it will very shortly prove of the utmost Import 'ance to the city and Its merchants. The farmers will now be able to dis pose of their products, where before they had to drive to the steamboat dock and then pay fre!ght and passage they will new be able to drive to town and sell the articles and, of course, patronlie our merchants. It will with out a doubt be a great benefactor to Astoria, Eoadmaster Frye, wbo had charge of this work. Is deserving of much credit for the splendid work, as Is President Gaston, of the road com mittee of the Push Club, with other members who have labored hard or this road, and the club is certainly to be congratulated upon their success. STATE FA IK. No time In the history of the Oregon state fair has there been such a good feeling among the agricultural classes towards the success of the fair as exists at the present time. Every section of the state seems to be taking an Interest In the fair and promises to give It their hearty support There are reasons for this awakenidfg of the people to support the fair. One Is, the management has worked hard and faithfully to make the fair as broad as the state itself. The transporta tion companies have come to their as sistance and trade very liberal rates on hauling exhibits of alt kinds. An other Is, the people are beginning to realize that it Is time to let the out side world know of the wonderful re sources of our state, and believe that the state fair is the proper place to meet the better class of home seekers. This will make the fair doubly valu able. It will give those looking for horns on the Coast an opportunity to see In a body what our state can pro duce, and where it Is produced, with out traveling all over that state at great expense. It will also give the exhibitor the best posible opportunity of showing his products, whether it be grains, grasses, fruits, vegetables livestock, minerals or manufactured goods. EXCELLENT IDEA. An exchange gives the following by an authority on civic improvement: "We have great confidence In the JOB PRINTING DEPARTMENT CDWARD PRIOR, MANAGER First-Class U p-t o-D a t e Work UNION LAIiOR ONLY "l lor a mU r for tew things one it the kt'iw li nt Iz in lilin, and the other te the spurn that air on him to txik op bi krow with." Join our association, and resolve yourself Into a commltte of one to Induce others to Join, and when you see anything that needs remedy ing, write us about II, and we promise to do our best to remedy it. We may not always succeed, but we nI!1 al ways try. Another thins you can do, and It will be effective Induce- the la dies of your acquaintance, who pur chase vegetables, fruits, etc., to Insist that the dealer from whom they pur chase must have his goods at least two feet from the ground, so that they will not be exposed to anPrala i nd the filth of the street. Otherwise, they should decline to patronise htm, ii-id he will soon fall into line. The ladies In Eastern cities have organised find are doing this, and the result s hUrbly sat isfactory. I have seen it tried here. and it worked the first time." ,V business nan has sail his prin cipal objection to the unions t-is that they all seemed to want to run the business for the proprietor. If this objection was at all valid it would be sweeping one indeed, and a great one, too. Hut with the present status of unionism throughout the country it cannot possibly constitute an objection to any man who cares to be posted. It is a fact not at all promising to many a man who thinks he is a busi ness man that he does not possess enough consideration for his work men to warrant him In being allowed to say what or how said workmen hould work. This kind of "business men are not capable of running their business, nor bossing a workman eith er, and it is the purpose of unionism o protect workers from the imposi tion of lust such employers. No union will do aught but assist the capable and considerate business man, but, owing to the fact that there are many of another class, unionism Is made a necessity; Indeed, it is just this great fact that is responsible for the exist ence of the union of working men.
