Captain Johnson, arrived at 8eattle from Port Valdes Friday af ternoon with news tending to confirm the belief that the United States mall steamer Tillamook haa either broken down or been lost altogether. It is learned that the Tillamook left Port Valdes for Dutch Harbor. November 14. and that nothing haa been heard from her since that time. The Bertha sailed from Valdea, December 16. Just thirty two days from the date of the Tilla mook a departure. W. W. Burge, a printer at Sumpter. haa been held In $200 bonds for the circuit court, to answer to a charge of assault with In tent to kill upon Gus Woodward, pro prietor of the Portland saloon. The Incident occurred Christmas night In the saloon, when hot words resulted from Burge's trying to collect a sum of money, said to be about $160, which he claimed he had won at playing zi there, and which had not been paid him. The men then resorted to a little pistol practice without any serious injury be ing done on either side. A fall caused the death of Paul Bork. a sailor on the ship Lucipara, at the ship a wharf In Portland yesterday. The ship Is high out of the water, and the level of the deck la quite a distance above the level of the wharf. A rope ladder over the ship side is the means for gaining the ship from the wharf. The sailor had taken a few drinks, and with a friend was returning to the ship. When near the top of the rope ladder he turned around to call back to the friend to ask him 'if he waa coming. In some way he lost his balance, and In falling his head struck the edge of the wharf. Medical assistance prov ed of no avail. The sailor was S5 years old and alngle. He shipped at Ham burg seven months ago, and previous ly ran a, saloon in Berlin. A goodly audience spent last evening at the First Methodist church and bid adieu to the fleeting century and wel comed the new with exercises both ap propriate and pleasant. The services were participated In by the pastors and members of other churches and the Salvation Army. ' The early evening was devoted to mu- slo and readings. Notable on the pro gram was a solo by Miss Jennie Welk. with chorus and solos by Captains Helm and Jaynes. After an Intermission for social Intercourse the discourse of the evening was rendered by Rev. Dell, of the Congregational church, who was followed ' by Rev. Hawkins, of Knanpa, Captains Ward and Holden and Rev. Trumbull. The highest bridge in the world has Just been completed in Alaska. It spans a gorge on the White Pass & Yukon railroad, and does away with a switch back. The bridge over the main por tion of the gorge is 400 feet long, ana with the trestle work at each approach 830 feet long. The track is 230 feet above the lowest part of the gorge. The steel work la 90 feet high. As may be Imagined, it cost a large sum of money, but a comparatively small sum as com pared with the cost of the entire road. It would seem that the promoters have unlimited capital at their back. Among other late news from Alaska Is reported a rich strike on the Tanana river. It is said that the gold runs $14 to the pan. The report caused the wild est excitement at points all alnog the trail where It was received, and a num ber of people were preparing to stam pede as soon as more definite Informa tion was received.
