The Chlng Wo was three and a half days coming down from Portland, yet the Oregnnlan gravely states that the "delays are between Astoria and the sea." Official statistics compile-! by the Tfrw Trk Produce Exchange show a marked falling off in the amount of wheat transported to New York by the Ere canal. Of the total receipts at that port for the past season 21.017.9S0 bushels arrived by rail and 3,523.000 buthels by canal. In 1S99 the canal carried 6.TSJ.00O bushels. According to Oregonlan Ideas, the grain shippers of the benighted East are guilty of the wildest folly In not recognising the su periority of the water route. KINYOUN IS AROUT TO GO. If Emperor Kwang Hsu be permitted by the empress dowager to return In safety to Pekln, the world will probably b3 presented with the spectacle of two rival claimants for the Chinese throne, between whom t will be necessary for the powers to make a choice. The ap peal of the emperor to the reform forces for aid is certain to bear fruit and to call forth a mighty movement in his behalf if he succeed in getting from under the control and Influence of the empress dowager. The powers can then do nothing better than give hire their unqualified support. AN OBITUARY. The Baker City chamber of commerce is no more. At a meeting on Wednes day night It was decided to disband and sell the furniture and other as sets of the organization for the purpose of raising the wherewithal to pay its debts. And yet Baker City Ilea out aide the moss belt. Concerning this un timely demise of its chamber of com merce, the Republican of that city pub lishee the following touching obituary: "This Institution drew Its last breath last night. It has been gasping fcr some time, having been sick with that fatal disease known as indifference. The time of Its demise is timely, occurring as it did at the close of the year and the century. Its best supporters plead for Its existence without avail, and now Baker City will be the butt of ridicule of every other town in Oregon. The Republican has supported it; has paid considerable money for its support; baa done considerable pay printing for It which never has nor never will be paid, and this gives us profound encourage ment to help out anything of the kind in the future. Peace to Its ashes, and the Immortal Poet haa writt3n the fol lowing epitaph: Here lies the Chamber of Commerce. Its sorrows were many. For want of a penny. At last the prospect that Dr. Klnyoun will be removed from his present office as quarantine officer at the port of San Francisco Is quite bright. Some of the merchants an ! transportation men hae come forward with complaints and evl donee that have caused the m'w collcv tor of the port ; Institute an invos titration, and the facts brousht out have been of such a character th.tt It Is hardly possible that Collector Strat t'n can full to report tht the Interests of the city demand that Kinyoun be no longer left In a position where he can Injure the commerce of the port and wreak his vengeance on a com munity that has offended him. There are rumors that the nn:horltlcs at nahlngton have in contemplation the removal of Kinyoun to some other post. fhls Is good news as far as It goes. Kinyoun has perpetrated a terrible wrong upon the people of this city. H, has been persistent and malignant In his attempt to create the Impres sion abroad that San Francisco Is a plague-Infested place. Ho once unnec essarily ordered a state quarantine which was with the greatest difficulty removed. ! has followed a cour that eft no doubt that his public acts w-ere Inspired by personal malice. His con duct aboard the ve-wla he has had to examln has been offensive to Importers nd passengers entering the port. He has been brusque and even Indecent in his treatment of persons with x hom he had to transact business, and partic ularly with those whose physical con dition he has had to ascertain. The fa.'ts In relation to the last mentioned ofiense are so revolting as to be un mentionable In the columns of a news paper. Kinyoun. In short, is simply in-possible as a public officer. The bulletin has been consistent and untiring In Its efforts to stir the peo ple up to a sense of the necessity for .idlon locking to the removal of this monstrosity in the guise of a federal oficer. In this work it ha had spasmod ic assistance from other newspapers, but it has had to bear the brunt of the battle to keep up a constant agi tation of the subject In order to car ry its point. It seems now that It Is about to be successful, so far as the city of San Francisco Is concerned. The forces which are strong enough to shake the Kinyoun Incubus from the back of the business community are at work. The chamber of commerce has also passed resolutions on the subject, though they ask only that Kinyoun be required to perform the duties of his office with "such tact and Judgment a? will enable travelers to enter this port without being exposed to Insult, needless delay, hardship and anxiety," an-i that they and consignees of goods may be treated with due consideration and courtesy, and no hindrance be placed upon the prompt delivery of the mails. While this by Implication Is a charge that these things have been done, the resolutions of the chamber fall short of the supreme object. The prayer should have been that Kinyoun be dismissed from the service, or at lea.?t removed from San Franilsco. The latter Is the very least that can be expected from the treasury department. It would relieve the port from the worst curse that has ever afflicted It- worse than any that could befall It, except, perhaps, such a plague as Kin youn would have the world believe ac tually exists here. Such a step would be a cure for the local sore, but it would not entirely remedy the evil. It would not be sufficient to remove from the service and the treasury depart ment the obloquy of having In Its em ployment such a man as Kinyoun. Still San Francisco will be very, very thank ful if an order be quickly made trans ferring Kinyoun to some other part of the. world. We do not wish mankind In general any calamity, but we are tempt ed to desire a fair division of evil. If Kinyoun can be equally divided among the people within the Jurisdic tion of the United States he may per haps be supportable, but no one com munity ought to be compelled to bear with him for any great length of time. San Francisco has done her share to ward his support. If the treasury de partment must have him, let it send him somewhere else, at least until this city can recover from the Infliction.
