The wre:k of the May Flint In San Francisco harbor Is buoyed, and steam ers making a landing at the Mall dock or going from the dock at the foot of Third street toward the Oakland mole have to keep a sham lookout in order to get clear of the "menace to navigation." says the Coll. The chances of saving her are small, and, as the case now stands, the vessel Is In a po sltlor that menaces shipping, and the owners will have to decide at once whether to blow her up or raise her. The chances favor another pyrotechnic display. A dispatch from Sllverton says hop- picking Is now occupying the attention of ft great many people In this vlcln Ity. It Is a general outing for all who can get away. The yards present a lively and business-like appearance. The combine of the growers In which they agreed to pay only S3 1-3 cents per box for picking, has been broken. There are several strikes, which re sulted In the growers raising to 40 cents, which Is now the general price. The yield In most of the yards Is about average, and the Quality is ex cellent. ) William 8mlth. of Kansas City, and W. B. Rhoades, of Pendleton, said to be expert counterfeiters, were rounded UP on the corner of First and Davis streets in Portland yesterday morning by Detectives Snow and Kerrigan, and are now safe In Jail, says the Telegram. The complete outfit of the men In cluding dies, labels, metal and the blocks and plaster paris ond flies. Smith Is the expert. He has been using Rhoades as a tool, the latter being young and kind of sreen. Rhoades ad mitted his guilt when questioned by the chief at the central station. Smith, however, stands firm and refuses to say a word. He Is evidently an old one at the criminal game. Snow and Ker rigan have been after the men for some time. The town naa been flooded with spurious coins of three denomi nations. Somewhere In or on this side of tha Straights of Magellan there Is a speck of a vessel, which before she reaches her Journey's end, will have beaten the Oregon's famous run In the opposite direction by several hundred miles. This small craft Is the tug Slocum, the property of the Quartermaster's de partment of the United State army. It was found necessary to have ft tugboat In San Francisco harbor, and the only thing the department could do was to send one around from New York. The Slocum, which was bought by the government In 1838, was se lected and was put into drydock lor repairs for '.he long and perilous Jour ney. She Is the largest tugboat ever hull) on the Delaware, and was launch ed In IMS at lllllmin' shipyard. The Hloeum left New York July 12 last. Six days later she was reporfd at St. Thomas, West Indies, and August 12 was at Buenos Ayres. She was to make stop at Punta. Arenas In the straits and at Cailao and Acapulco, on tha west coaat. Her ftverag rate of speed Is ten miles an hour. The total distance of the voyage Is 14.2)1 mil) and the sailing tmle Is 57 days and 14 hoars. She will coal several times on the trip, as her capacity admits of steaming only about 2.000 miles with out replenishing her bunkers. The Slo cum Is In command of Captain K. J. lUmpton. Unltid States army, Quar termaster's department, and . has ft sailing master and navigator. Fire was discovered yesterday morn ing at 11 o'clock n the coal bunkers of the Pacific Coast Company, at the urtper end of the O. R. & N. wharf. The wharf fire apparatus was used with good effect and the fire did not gain much headway and the trompt arrival of the fire department caused the fire to be brought rapidly under control. The hose wa run under the street railway and the railroad to allow the passage of the street cars and the Sea side train. It being attached to the hydrant at the new Prael building. The fire started from spontaneous combus tion In the bottom of the bunkers and had It gained headway would have been an exceedingly difficult proposition to contend with. The efficient work of the fire department, however, pre vented what might have been a str lous confagratlon. One would naturally Infir from the account in the columns of our worthy contemporaries, the local evening pa pers, that our fire company was Incom petent and that It Is only because we are especially favored by fortune that we do not have conflagrations that would engulf the town, The Inference is bad and would be liable to create an unfavorable Impression In the minds of Insurance and surety companies and possible Investors In our property If any one read the papers, which, fortunately, they sdo not. Credit should be given where due, and It Is generally supposed that we have ft competent and able fire depart ment and one capable of competing with a quiet northwest Dreeze that was hardly strong enough to carry the smoke away. If we have not, the mat ter should be remedied at once. The British shin Genista cleared from this port yesterday afternoon with 103. 692 bushels of wheat, valued at $61,178, says last evening's Telegram. The Gen ista was dispatched by Balfour. Guth rie ft Co., and goes to Queenstown or Falmouth or orders. The British ship Oreslla was cleared this morning by the same firm. She carries 103.S10 bushels of wheat, valued at $52,300. and Is also bound for orders. The Genista and Orealla are the first sailing ves sels to clear foreign from this port since the beginning of the month. There was considerable trouble over crews for the Genleta and Orealla. Owners objected to paying the rates. and crews are coming from San Fran Cisco. For ft year or more the agree ment between the boarding-house men agents was strictly reduceO to the min imum. The treaty was finally broken and the sailor men retaliated. Rela tions are now strained. Considerable amusement was occas loned at the preliminary hearing of Jack O'Connor In Justlcs court yester day afternoon when James Ryan re lated the conversation that led up to the shooting affair In the Anchor saloon Wednesday morning. In the discussion between the two men, O' Connor and Johnson, the former made use of the word "dogma" In regard to Johnson's opinion as to the relative chances of the candidates In the com ing presidential election. The word was not understood by Johnson, who thought the other was calling blm a dog, which he reaenUd and took Imme diate steps to avenge with disastrous result. A man naturally objects to be ing called a cur but a cursory glance at a dictionary is sometimes advisable before launching out Inta fistic efforts at annihilation over an unfamiliar but doubtful sounding word, even In a political discussion. According to the New York Commer cial Philip F. Kelley. of Seattle, vice president of Holden,' Kelley & Corbey, arrived In New York recently on a trip to Eastern markets. Mr. Kelley is an acknowledged auhtorlty on salmon, nnd particularly pertaining to the packs of Puget sound, as well as of the 'raiser and Northern il'-ers. Re garding salmon. Mr. KeUey said to the Commercial yesterday; "The cost of canning salmon on Puget sound Is Fuch sn uncertain problem that It can t.ot he safely computed until the sea- ton Is over and the pack completed. To prepare for a pack on Puget sound the necessary supplies of tlnplate, block tin. pig lead, boxes, lacquer, la bels and a thousand and one things which enter Into the make-up of a pack, as a matter of course, must be provided for In advance. Thus far the troblem Is es9y. The uncertainty com mences when the canner starts to pro cure his help, which Is usually com pesed of Chinese, controlled by some of the large companies located at Se attle and Portland. As a matter of fact. Puget sound packers would much prefer a fairly large slse pack with low prices than such a shortage as has oc curred this year, which has necessitated what are considered by some to be ex cessively high prices, but. which as a n atter of fact will show every capnery engaged in the Industry a heavy loss.
