I : For President WILLIAM H'KIXLEY, Of Ohio. For Ykc-Fresidcnt THEODORE ROOSEVELT, Of New York. A few more saloon brawls and As toria will have as tough a reputation as Portland now enjoys. Geologists assort that the island up on which Galveston is located is slow ly sinking and that in a few hundred years It win be entirely submerged be neath the waters of the gulf. The re cent fearful catastrophe which nearly destoyed the city Is likely to be enough in itself to lower the value of Insular and coast real estate In that part of the South, but when the as surance of coming permanent submer sion is added, a prosperous future for Galveston seems impossible. The pres3 Is the greatest con servator, educator and eleemosy nary Institution which our coun try possess?. It calls atten- betterment It forces public officials to do rightly, by keeping ever before them the fear of exposure. It compels the people to think on the great questions of the day as well as the small and furnishes the latest Information obtain able on every topic. Its work as a charitable institution Is less often noted but exists none the less. Recent strik ing examples of this are found In the cargoes of grain shipped to the Indian famine sufferers through the Christian Herald and the train load of supplies now being rushed to Galveston by the great dailies of New York and other cities. Press dispatches found in today's Astorlan show that the New York World now has four cars of pro visions and clothing on the road and the Journal and Advertiser has a train of doctors, nurses, medicines, etc., now en route to the gulf. WORSE THAN WAR TAXES. Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Some of the Bryan organs are In a state of mind on account of the war taxes and complain that the citizen Is "fined" by the government: When he sends a telegram. When he draws a check. When he becomes a member of a corporation. When he transfers his stock. When be Insures his house or his life. When he assigns his assurance. When he makes a note to raise money for the payment of other taxes. When he buys a money order. When he executes a lease. When he sends a paid telephone mes sage. When an Indemnity bond Is given. When a bill of exchange is drawn. When a citizen executes an Instru ment necessary In the sale of merchan dise on 'change. When he ships goods by freight or express. When he clears a vessel and files a manifest. When he executes a power of attor ney. When he buys proprietary medicines. When he uses any perfumes or his wife indulges In cosmetics. When a note Is protested. Wht-n a warehouse receipt is giwn. When merchandise Is Insured In a custom house. Well, there was a bll.fil time when this country was not paying war tax es. It was from ISM to 1S96: When business men were failing. When banks were suspended. When manufacturers were closing their shops. When the wheels of machinery were silent. When factory chimneys were smoke loss. When wage-ea.ners were out of Job. When Idle men walked the streets In despair. When women and children went rag ged and hungry. When thousands of families, accus tomed to prosperity and too proud to ben, suffered In silence. When the cry for bread was heard in the land. When free soup houses kept many peorle from starving. When many enterprises were at a standstill. When the grim specter of want wa a familiar sight. This was when the party of ''tariff reform" and "free silver" was get ting In Its deadly work. It was harder for working people to buy a loaf of bread then than It Is to buy & roast beef now. It .took longer to earn a pair of shoes then than It does to earn a suit of clothes now. In short, ail the people are more prosperous and comfortable in this time of "war taxes" than they were In that time of de pression and Idleness. Everybody knows that this is so, and yet the party of calamity Is emitting hypocritical groans and insincere flapdoodle In an effort to create discontent and advance its political fortunes. We don't think ti will fool many people, because mem ory is not a lost human faculty, and experience is a faithful teacher. "I had a running sore on ny leg for seven years," writes Mrs. Jas. Forest, cf Cheppewa Falls, Wis., "and spent hundreds of dollars In trying to get it healed. Two boxes of Banner Salve entirely cured It." CHAS. ROGERS, Druggist Most people who try to ride the wheel of fortune, manage to puncture the tire before they get very far. A good many consumptives would be cured and the worst cases comforted and relieved by using Foley's Honey and Tar. Suggest it to those afflict ed. Tou should do this as a friend. CHAS. ROGERS. Druggist. Once a wheel always a wheel; first a bicycle then a tandem, and last but not least a baby carriage. Ulcers, open or obstinate sores, scalds and plies, quickly cured by Banner Salve, the most healing medicine In the world. CHAS. ROGERS. Druggist. When a man begins to Imagine that he is in love with a bloomer girl, it's about time for him to stop drinking. Allen Halverson of West Prairie. Wis., says: "People come ten miles to buy Foley's Kidney Cure." while J. A. Spe ro. of Helmer, Ind.. says: "It Is the medical wonder of the age." CHAS. ROGERS. Druggist. Corrects all blemishes of 5 the face, removes blot ches, pln'plea, tan. run- burn, freckles and makes a beautiful complexion. It Is also the best tooth wash, and excellent for deranged stomach.
