Per President WILLIAM M'KIXLCY, Of Ohio. Pox Vice-President THEODORE ROOSEVELT, Of New York. ' The Yankees of the East and the Yankees of the 'West appear to have earned all the honors in the Chinese campaign. . With two brilliant evening papers shining like meteors In Astoria's sky. the expenditure of the city's shekels for electric lights seems the wildest extravagance. Lord Londonderry doesn't propose to allow American conveniences to Inter fere with British ox-cart methods of doing business, because it wouldn't be English, you know. If our wives or our sweethearts can wear our hats and collars and ties, and. occasionally, our bicycle trousers, w hy may not we sterner mortals, bor row a shirt waist once In & while? The absurdity of LI Hung Chang's request of the powers for a cessation of hostilities, while Boxer atrocities are still being perpetrated and after he has made the admission that he and his party no Jcnger have any Influence with the party In power and are consequent ly unable to stop the Chinese from their assaults upon foreigners, does not appear to occur to the old gentleman. If the rumors that the O. R. ft X. Co. Is to extend Its line along the north bank of the Columbia should prove true, the result must Inevitably be the ex tension of one of the great trunk lines along this side of 'he river and the granting of common point rates to As toria, or. In other words, the making of Astoria the terminus of one of the trans-continental systems. The great railroad lines of the country are be ginning to realize the futility of the nttemnt to make of Portland a great seaport, as slilD after ship gets stuck on the sandbars of the Willamette and the upper Columbia. Whatever of truth there may be In the present ru mors concerning the Intentions of the O. R. & N.. the future of Astoria as the great shipping port of the Columbia valley Is assured by recent develop ments as It never was before. i. CHINESE DIVERSITIES. New York Tribune. Successor to Th. Olsen, 100-2 Com. St, V? 4? 1,1 Mm UJIEG Indeed. c( the m?nac which China might become to all the rest of the world, snoke of. the Chinese (empire as containing a homogeneous nation of about four humlr.vl million people, all with the same language, customs and laws. It Is true, as we have hitherto observed, that ft solidarity and unity quite unprecedented In Chinese history have b-en developed In the Chinese troubles. Yet the facts of the case are by no means such as might be inferred from Lord Wolseley's statement. It Is perfectly well known that In the Chi nese empire there are two major races, differing widely from each other In many Important characteristics, and hitherto antagonistic to each other, and that In the western provinces sev eral minor yet still numerous and Im portant races are to be found. It Is no loss true that the lai.guages of the em pire are several, distinguished by rad ical differences. The two great races are, of course, the Chinese and the Tartars, which are at least as different from each other as, let us say. the French and Irish. But each of these Is subdivided Into several tribes, and there are others entirely apart from both. In northeastern Manchuria we find the Tunsuses. a distinct race, and In the extreme south the Shans. Burmese and Siamese. The Tibetans form another element, while In Turkestan we rind several more, wlih religion and customs as different from those of the Chinese as those of England are from those of Russia. The empire Is. Indeed, a composite one, which has been so long held together largely by granting to each of Its mem bers the, largest possible degree of self-government. The diversity of races suggests the diversity of languages. Passing by the old or classic Chinese, which Is now practically a dead language, we find the modern Chinese, used generally In the north, central and western prov inces of the middle kingdom, the most Important of all. But when we reach the south we find In Kwang Tung some fifteen millions who speak Cantonese and five millions more who use only the Hakka dialects; and any of these twen ty millions transported to Pekin would te as unable to understand or to make himself understood as would a '"Bow ery Boy" In Paris. Again, there are the Mln dialects, spoken In Foo-Kien. Che Kiang and elsewhere. These are three In number, one of them being used by ten millions and th; others by five millions each. Finally there are the Wu dialects, three in number, with three more variant branches. Of these Wen-Chow claims one with one million users. Ning-Po another with twenty five millions, and Shanghai and Soo Chow the third with eighteen millions. Here. then, we have at least eighty four million people In China proper, not to mention Mongolia. Turkestan, Tibet and other regions, who do not use the true Chinese language. The fact Is that such cities as Can ton. Foo-Chow and Narg-Po are as dis tinct from each other In language as Paris. London and Berlin, and natives of aiy one would feel like and be re garded as foreign?rs in any other. This fact might not, of course, necessarily prevent their all combining to resist conquest by the Western powers. For nt least they all belong to the great Mongolian race, and have certain com mon characteristics and customs. But at times they have warred among themselves, and their diversities of tribe and tongue may yet be counted upor, as a potent factor In the final dis position of the empire. A FEW INTERESTING FACTS When people are contemplating a trip, whether on business or pleasure, they naturally want the best ervlce obtainable as far as speed, comfort and safety Is concerned.
