Poi President WILLIAM M'KIXLCT, Of Ohio. For Yke-r'resident THE0D0KE ROOSEVELT, Of Xew York. The bare-faced fraud upon which one of Astoria's evening dailies depends for Its telegraphic report Is HtUe short of marvelous. Yesterday's edition was fully as up-to-date as usual, but con tained two dispatches the date of which had been raised one day and one the date of which was raised two days. By such honorable (?) methods and a liberal use of slugs and large type, it Is enabled to make a pretense of publishing a telegraphic report. The following extract from a resent editorial In the San Francisco Bulle tin -strikes the keynote of Pacific coast needs, and is especially pertinent to Astorinns at this time: Factories are a sound basis of pros perity. The drawback which Califor nia as a state most feels the effects of Is the habit of Its people to clothe themselves with the products of East ern and foreign looms. It Is a silly habit which our people should work out of. Reform In this direction Is much needed, but who would have expected It to show Its aggressive front in Berke ley? The proposition Is to commence with & furniture factory. Fashioning furniture Is a neat and quiet occupa tion which produces a hum rather than a noise, and exhales no soot or smoke. But manufacturing centers are not composed of furniture factories. Iron and steel foundries and kindred Indus tries are as useful and as productive as the; wood carver's trade. , . IS KWANG HSU HOSTILE? Yesterday's dispatch that "the Chi nese plans for the recapture of the TJen Tsin and Taku forts have been sanctioned by the emperor" will not be accepted as true by the reading pub lic, without unquestionable verification.: That the empress dowager has been giving "aid and comfort" to the Box er movement Is no longer doubted, but she represents the ultra-conservative, anti-foreign party, which Is at logger heads with Kwang Hsu and in its tri umph wrought his utter downfall and placed him Id durance vile. At the time when Empress An assum ed the reins of government, Emperor Kwang Hsu, as rightful sovereign, ap pealed to England for British aid In securing his reinstatement, relying up on his well-known friendlineHS for for- USSof Baldwin's Celery Soda eoras a headache at ono. This sup port England, probably through fear of Rueaia, did not see lit to' give, and ICwung Hsu has been compelled to re main subject to the will of the emprvss dowager up to the pre-svnt time when the natural trend of events points to his restoration to power and the perma nent destruction of the party of the empress. As it appears to us, the on ly hope for the continuance of China's integrity Ilea In the aid which the al lies may now feet disposed to grant to the deposed emperor and he reform party of which he Is the logical. If not actual, head. This aid would, of course, be refused If It should be as certained that Kwang Hsu had become Involved In anti-foreign Intrigues. In that case the endeavor of the United States to prevent the dismemberment of China would be rendorel exceeding' ly dift'cuH. if not impossible, of aC' complishmcnt In the face of European lust for territory. AX AMERICAN TRIUMPH. Tacoma News. The manufacturers of American silk have scored a notable triumph at the Paris 'exposition. They have been awarded the gold medal over the French exhibit, and European manu facturers have been Riven an uncom fortable shock. Silk Is one of the newer American industries which has been successfully developed under a protective tariff. In ISiO our Importations of raw silk free of duty for use in manufacture amount ed In value to tl2.063.SSO. In 1SS9 they amounted to In 1SS0 we Im ported manufactured silk goods to the value of J32.1SS.690; in 1S99 to the value of only I27.SS0.6S3. Thus the Im portation of manufactured silk was held In check and actually reduced by 13 per cent, while the manufacture of silks in this country Increased 2w) per cent. . Last year we imported sl!k fabrics from France to the value of $12,193,293; from Germany, M9SS.513; and from Switzerland J3.9S6.01S, but at the same time we purchased raw silk In Japan for J20.927.S90; in China for $10,554,071, and In Italy for $9,370,750. and produced silks of our own manufacture which at Paris are declared by an Interna tional Jury of award to be the superior of those produced at the home of the silk industry. It Is apparent that there Is a great future for American silk, and the an nouncement of the award will cause a thrill of gratifying surprise and par donable pride. American women should bear these facts in mind and push along prosper ity by abandoning the foolish notion that French silk and French dress makers can produce a better gown than can be had at home for less money.
