The people of Astoria should join with the local braves In an endeavor to give the vla lt or the best order of entertainment within their power. The preliminary arrangementa have be-n made for a match between Bob Thompson, of 8an Francisco, and Charles Joat, of Portland, to take place In this city on the night of Friday, Au gust 24th. The contest will be for twenty rounds and a good-aised stake la guaranteed. Both men have good reputations aa boxers and no doubt will attra.-t much attention. Dr. Tuttle. Samuel F. Gordon. Wil liam Beasley and Clark Lowry have juat returned from a trip to the head watera of Knappa creek, where they went for a brief outing. The party saw no gam of any kind and the 'em perature waa exceedingly warm. Sev eral fine photographic views of the aoenery were taken, however, and 'the party returned well satisfied with tho trip. It Is hoped that the committee re cently appointed by Mayor Bergman to propose necessary amendments to the city charter will do everything within their power to sift the matter thor oughly. Conferences with tax-pajers and city officials would tend to make the work of. Investigation more com plete and the final recommendations more satisfactory. Tinkering with municipal charters Is a very serious matter and nothing should be done without the most thorough considera tion. The questions relating to as sessments for atreet work have been a source of annoyance In thla city, both to councllmen and the taxpayers, for several years. The charter needs amending but when the alterations are once decided upon they should be such that the matter shall be. definitely and satisfactorily settled. Warrenton people want a bicycle path to the beach. According to the Trib une of yesterday they are much alive to the benefits to be derived from such a project. But let the Tribune ex presa It in Its own words: ''Warren ton people are much Interested In hav ing a plank road or bicycle path to the beach. The subject was talked of by a f.w of the cltixens the other day and It waa soon found that all the Wnrrenton people were Interested. Quite a sum was pledged within a few minutes for the purpose. The needs of the city demand It. People In Portland who wish to make a trip to the beach and return In one day badly need the path. The path or road would advertise the city, sell property, bring campers for the summer season. Induce people to build, make the city lively. It Is the best project In the reach of the Warrenton people for the good of the city. A mass meeting will be held at the Tribune building this evening." The funeral of J. W. This fiery crater, now suddenly silent, was explored by scientific men who discovered that the cone had disap peared. Several th-snries are propound ed as to why the eruption ceased, also regarding thw disappearance of the cone. The general belief is that It was due to subsidence, and which Is look ed upon as providential. It waa as unexpected as are the stomach disor ders with which people suddenly find themselves afflicted. Slight symptoms are neglected, until dyspepsia Is chron ic. The remedy to take Is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. This valuable medi cine Is unequalled In all cases of con stipation. Indigestion, biliousness, or malaria, fever and ague.
