The Republican national committee sent out blanks to members of the Na tional Association of Manufacturers, asking them to furnish the number of men whom they had employed In each year from 1S90 to 1S99 Inclusive, as well as the total amount 'of wages which they had paid during the same years. There were 200 replies. They showed a steady Increase In the number of hands employed in the 200 factorUs until the year 1S93. There was an Im mediate drop of 10.000 men In ISM. wh?n they employed 90,48$ men. But In 1897 they employed 109,600; in 1S9S, 131,428 men. and last year 174,843 men. In short, the number of wage-earners employed by these same 200 factor- les increased from 90.4S3 men In 1S94 up to 174.(45 last year almost doubled. But the contrast Is even more strik ing when applied to the amount of wages paid, and the following table shows the returns received from the 200 manufacturers: Tear. Wages Paid. 1890 $45,149,081 1891 49.875,858 1892 53.619,418 1893 48,966,250 1895 52,831.317 1896 53.209.430 1897 54,412.774 1898 6247.941 1899 78,835,069 The amount of wages paid by thsse same 200 manufacturers Increased steadily from 1S90 to 1892, then there , , . , I a drop in 1893 and another drop ! was r . In 1894. Dnrinir th nert turn vtin , , wages picked up. but It was not until : 1897 that these same manufacturer! were paying out as much money Jn wages as they had paid In 1S92. Between 1894 and 1899, the 200 manu facturers had Increased their pay rolls by upwards of 138,000,000. In fact, the amount of wages doubled what ihey paid out In 1894. Apply this to the w hole country and try to realUe what benefit "opening the mills" has b-!en to American wage-earners and to those who feed and clothe them. A REPORT OX RAILWAYS. San Francisco Call. A summary of the railway statistics which Is to appear in the twelfth sta tistical report of the Interestate Com merce Commission has Just been given out to the press. It covers the fiscal year ending June 30, 1893. It appears that on that date the total single track railway mileage In the United States was 189,294.66 miles, au Increase during tho year of 2,898.34 miles bei.g shown. This Increase Is greater than for any other year since 1893. The states and territork-s which show an Increase In mileage in excess of 100 imles are Alabama, Arkansas. Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn sylvania, Texas, Arizona, New Mexi co and Oklahoma. An evidence of the Increasing pros perity of the railways of 'the country Is afforded by the fact that the number In the hands of receivers at the close of the fiscal year was 71, there being a nel decrease of 23 as compared with the corres ponding date of the previous year. The number of railways placed In charge of receivers during the year was 16 and i:,- rMiiiMf rnnjvej from their man agement was 39. The operated mileage of the roads under receivers on June 30. 1$?!, was 9.S33.13 miles, of which 7,:;5.W milrs were owned by them. Of the. roads In the hand of receiver on the date named 10 had an operated mileage In excess of 300 wiles, 1 be tween 100 and 300 miles, and 40 less than 100 miles. Other proofs of prosperity are found In the statistics relating to traffic. The number of passengers carried during the year was 523,176,508, showing an In crease for the year of 22,10,SJ7. Tie number of passengers carried one mile that is, passenger mileage during the year was 14.C?I.327,I3 there being an Increase In this Item of l,2ll.97.0i The number of tons of freight carried during the year was 9i9,7tJ3.-$3, an In crease of SO.75T.27S being shown. The number of tons of freight carried one mile that Is. ton mileage was 12J.6S7. 2:i7.irS. The increase in the number of tons carried one mile was 9,Jn9.um!MS. The average revenue per passenger per mile for the year ending June 30, 1S99, was 1.925 cents, for the preceding year It was 1.973 cents. The revenue per ton iM :iight per mile was .721 rent, while for lM'S it was .7.i3 cent. An increase In milage earnings I shown fur both passenger and freight trains. !n conclusion the statistician of the commission repeats nu rrevijus n com mon iulions to the effect thaC reports should be stvuid from express com panies engaged In Interstate traffic that rrHrts should be secured froi; corporations and companies owning rolling stock which is used In Inter state traffic; and also special reports from corporations and companies own ing depot property, stock yards, eieva tors, and the like; and that reports should be secured from carriers by water, so far as their business Is In terstate traffic. The recommendations are deserving of support. Since the commission has been established congress should giant It all powers required to make It use ful In as many ways as possible. There is certainly no reason why the In terstate commerce handled by express companies should not be supervised by the commission as well as that handled by railways. WATCH THE BOYS.
