The federal commission appointed to
locate the site for a dry-dock, com
posed of Captain Henry Glass, Lieu
tenant Philip Andrews and Lieutenant
H. R. Stanford, of the navy department,
are In the city. They arrived yester
day morning and were entertained by
Chairman Van Dusen, of the Chamber
of Commerce, Early In the afternoon
the engineers, accompanied by Chair
man Van Dusen, Captain John Adair
and others, went down the river on the
government quarantine launch Electric.
The party will probably leave up the
river on an Investigating trip today,

ment, accepting the Franklin avenue
Improvement and providing for the

The Marahfleid Hun says the gaso
line launch Union ran onto a rock on
the headwaters of North Coos river,
Monday, tearing several holes In her
bottom, bending her shaft and damag
ing the propeller. The water came
pouting In at a lively rate and Captain
Holland got his boat beached just In
time to keep her from sinking. After
her cargo of milk cans was placed on
shore she was bulled out and the holes
patched up. The Union was towed to
town by Julius Larsen's gasoline launch
and has since been repaired and Is
again ready for service.
Tho action of the city council pro
viding (or the appointment of a com
mittee to recommend changes In the
city charter to the-next legislature bu
met with the general approval of tax
payers throughout the city. Mayor
Bergman yesterday announced the ap
pointment of Messrs. 8cherneckau, Ut-
singer and Cook aa members of the
committee, City Attorney Smith to act
as au advisory member. The duty de
volving upon the committee Is an Im
portant one, as upon Its work with
the legislators will depend the succees
of the efforts of those who Are labor
ing to Improve the regulations govern
ing eireet work and many other muni
cipal and county reforms.
Attention la called to the notice In
this Issue announcing the meeting to
be held on the evening of July 2$ for
the purpose of ratifying the nomination
of Bryan and Stevenson and for the
organisation of a club tor the coming
presidential campaign. Arrangements
are also being mode for a grand dollar
dinner to take place at the conclusion
of the meeting. The Democratic exe
cutive committee have the matter In
hand and will make further announce
ment as to the place of meeting and
the manner In which tickets can be
had for the banquet. Everyone who
loves Hryan and liberty Is Invited to
the meeting at which there will be some
of the best speakers in the state.
The Oregon Naval Reeerve will start
on Its annual cruise next Saturday, ac
cording to last night's Telegram. The
cruiser Philadelphia haa been ordered
to Portland to take the boys to sea,
and will arrive there either Friday
evening or Saturdvy morning. She
will stay only long enough to allow all
time to get on board. The reserve will,
In the opinion of Captain R. E. Davis,
turn out all Ita officers and probably
foo men. Its full strength Is about
l,'o, but Captain Davis says that at
least fifty will not be able to make
the trip. Most of the fifty are residents
of Astoria. The cruise will last just
one week and will be along the coast,
50 or 100 miles off shore.
Mayor Bergman haa shown a moat
commendable deposition to furnish
every facility for furnishing lights for
the city of Astoria, by promptly sign
ing the ordinance calling for bids. The
city will now proceed to solicit bids
for tho supply of from fifty to sixty
live arc lights of not less than 1200
candle-power at a specific maximum
rate of "JG.00 per light per month. The
people of Astoria are anxious that the
llKhtlng question be definitely settled,
one way or another. The action of
the council and of Mayor Bergman will
no doubt bring the matter to a focus
without much delay. The maximum
rate of $6.00 per light fixed by the
council precludes the probability of
tho West Shore Mills Company entering
the contest unless It shaves ita former
figures enormously. Should the com
pany stand firm on Its original prop
osition some outside concern will secure
the plum unless the city decides to
Inaugurate a plant of Ita own. It la
the general opinion, however, that the
West Shore Mills Company, finally be
ing convinced that the councllmen will
not permit the taxpayers to be held up
under Its extortion, will submit to the
inevitable and put In a reasonable bid. ,

sources and It Is now iMiaonably cer
tain that Astoria will tunve a public

formation Is solicited concerning chil
dren needing home. Superintendent
Tobey states that within the past five
years over 400 children have be-n placed
In good homes, under the auspices of
the society. The work has been or
ganised throughout the Northwest and
great success has attended the efforts
of thoae having the work In charge.

In view of the present controversy
over the lighting and power question
In this city, news of what other titles
are d'ltig In that direction Is of Inter
est to the people of Astoria. The New
York Commercial of the 12th Inst pub
lishes the following: "A radical depar
ture from the atorage battery system
of operating street railroads wse taken
by the Montreal Street Railroad Co.
this week when a contract was made
with a waterpower company to supply
the electric energy for twenty-five
years. The contract was made with
the Chambly Water it Power Co., re
cently organised, to develop water pow
er from the currents and waterfall of
a river at that point, and then to trans
fer Into electric power, which can be
then sent by wire to Montreal In the
same manner aa Buffalo stret railway
systems now obtain power from Niaga
ra. The Chambly Water A Power Co.
agrees to supply power to the 'street
railway at a cost of 125 per horse
power per year for 1,000 horse-power."

CORUETT MAKES A STATEMENT.
The Ex-Senator Tells an Astorian Jtep

cerning the Peterson Case.
Ex-Senator H. W. Corbett, who has
Just been sued for $100,000 damages by
E. E. Peterson, of Butte, Montana, for
alienation of his .wife's affections, was
over from Long Beach on business yes
terday and In an Interview with an
Astorian representative gave the facta
concerning the case which is now
bringing him so much unpleasant no
toriety. Mr. Corbett stated that Mrs. Peter
son's father, who resides at Albany,
was known by him in former years,
and that through knowledge of thla
fact Mrs. Peterson worked upon his
sympathies to such an extent that ha
made her a loan on two separate oc
casions, for which he received her
note, to aid In the care of ' the old
gentleman, whom h3 understood was
suffering from a paralytic stroke and
In needy circumstances. He had not
been ' acquainted with Mrs. Peterson
previously, nor did he have any other
relations with her than that of a bene
factor to her father through her. Mrs.
Peterson stated to Mr. Corbett that she
had left her husband by mutual agree
ment and had come tar Oregon to care
tor her Invalid father. The ex-senator
tired of her continued importunities and
Anally secured from her a definite
statement and agreement that she
would annoy him no more.
According to the statement of Judge
Henry McGinn, she tberr went to him
to obtain his assistance In pushing a
tluck-malllng schema against the ex
senator, saying that he had plenty of
funds and that they might as well pro
cure a portion of them as not. Judge
McGinn indignantly refused to have
anything to do with' the affair and
consequently she was forced to secure
other backers, who Mr. Corbett believes
are politicians .who have special rea
sons for taking up the! enterprise.
Mr. Corbett has evidence to prove
that Mrs. Peterson returned to Butte
and woxked cut this suit In collualoa
with her huitband, from whom she
tiulms to be desirous of a legal separa
tion. He Is also prepared to prove
some Interesting facta concerning the
previous reputations of Mr. and Mrs,
Peterson, a portion of which testimony
was shown to the Astorian representa
tive. The case Is an interesting one, owing
to the prominence of Mr, Corbett.
It has been announced In shipping
circles that the tug Maggie, which
came near being a total wreck In the
rileualaw, a few months ago, will be
taken to Portland this week for repairs
to her engines and boiler. For some
time pust she has Wen on the ways
at Florence and has be-n thoroughly
overhauled. She Is said to be In bet
ter condition than she was before she
went on the beach.
The report comes from Tillamook
that the schooner Llla and Mattle,
which ha been bottom up in the bay
for some time, has finally righted. The
Llla and Mattle went ashore several
months sgo. She waa finally got oft
the sand and then she turned turtle.
The wreck then became Involved in liti
gation. Tills has now been settled and
the craft righted.
