The result of th meeting could not be learned last night. Th Portland Telegram publishes Mr. Ingalls' charges, which have already appeared In the Asto rlun, and follows the sum with a stste m.nt from Superintendent Gardiner In hi own defense. The Telegram quotes Gardiner as follows; "He say that Mr. Ingalls endeavored for sometime In secur a Klrl from th Horn, but the references proved unsatisfactory. Somctlnw ago he visited the Ingalls home and was not favorably Impressed with the girl's surroundings. Th child, when he spoke to her, did not answer, but cried the whole time. Later he received Information which decided him to remove the child to th Home, at U-ast temporarily, pending an Inves tigation. When Officer Hawlry return ed with the girl, Mr. Gardiner question ed her as to the Ingalls. The girl ac know (edged that they sent her to school and clothed her, but said her life there was unhappy. She declared that she had tc do the work for the Ingalls' family as well as for the family of Inriilla' son next door. . Lena said she did not want to be sent back to the Ingalls, and If this was done she would run away." Mr. Ingalls declur ed that the girl never expressed her self as desirous of leaving his honte. RESTORATION OF PEACE. Horn John Parrot t Gives His Views on Chinese Troubles. In an Interview given in Cincinnati, Hon. John H. Barrett, ex-United States minister to Slam, has the fol lowing to say regarding the restora tion of peace in China: "In restoring peace In China the United States should be the principal Influence In the future and the fate of China. It Is American Influence on ly that can successfully relieve this problem and keep China from an Im pending brenkup. America must stand for the Integrity of the Chinese era rlre, fcr we have everything to lose and nothing to gain by her partition among the European powers. "If America allows China to be di vided, the expansion of our commerce and the extent of our moral Influence will bo absolutely limited by the at titude and policy of European nations. "Another Interesting point Is this: The United States Is the only power whose leadership and dictation of policy Russia would accept." A NEW TRAIN. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Co. will place In service April 2!Hh a New Train between St. Paul and St. Louis, called the "Flying Dutch man." Ue Force on the river near Warrc-nton explod-d about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, sad as a re sult J. C. Shaw, an employee, was kill ed, Engineer Maurice W. Moor was severely Injured and Chris Rents, who also was coiinec'.ed with th factory. Is missing. Rents had been collecting fish hearts and offal for the factory and was shoveling a load Into the receiver at the factory at the time of the exploalon. The boat was found In Its old position after tha catastrophe, but Rents could not be found. It Is believed that he was thrown overboard by the concussion and was drowned. That portion of the factory In which tho boiler was located was totally de mollnhed, the machinery being almost completely wrecked and part of t thrown Into the river below. Hliaw, Moore and Rents were the on ly white persons about the premises. Several Chinese were at work on the upper floor but none of them were In lured. There Is not the slightest knowledge as to tht cause of the explosion. As soon as news of th accident reached this city Coroner Pohl and tlty Physician Hcnd?rson left on the launch Elf for the factory. When they arrived thire they found a most hor rifying condition of affairs. It was found that Shaw's head had been crushed between the ' wbart and the plhng, the back part of the skull be ing completely torn away, permitting the bfalns to fall out Into the river. Engineer Moore had been placed upon a mattress and was found suffering the tortures of Intense pain. The engineer was brought to Astoria and placed In PL Mary's hospital, where Dr. Hen derson dressed his wounds. Dr. Hen derson stated last night that he had found Moore's right arm badly crushed between the shoulder and elbow. The doc'or was not certain that Internal Injuries had been sustained. Four ribs were found to have been broken and If this proves to be the extent of Moore's bodily Injury, he will easily recover. Moore has no family and has been In the employ of Mr. De Force but a few weeks. He was formerly a loco motive engineer In California and came from Sun Francisco to Astoria on the tug Samson. Shaw Is a stranger In Astoria. He cume here only about two weeks ago and did not begin work at tho factory until the early part of last week. Chris Rents, the missing man. Is well known In this city. He came here In 1858 and has slne that time been en gaged In fishing and running scows on the lower Columbia river. He was about 43 years of age and unmarried. He has a brother, John Rents, who re- slle In Seattle, and his father is said to be somewhere in the Sandwich Isl ands. Moore Was asked at the hospital lost night what he knew concerning the ex plosion. He declared that, as far as the cause was concerned, he had not the slightest knowledge. About an hour before the explosion the steam-guage registered only ninety pounds pressure. Only a few minutes before the explo sion, he said, he had shut off the In jector and that the addition of the cold water in the boiler had, by that time, reduced the pressure to a frac tion less than sixty-five pounds. If Mr. Moore's statement Is correct the only conclusion that can be ar rived at ns a solution of the cause of yesterday's disaster Is that the boiler was defective. Mr. De Force was seen shortly after the report concerning the explosion had reached this city, but would not express an opinion on the matter fur ther than that he had heard that ono of the men was killed, another injur ed and another mlsMng and that he knew nothing except that an explosion had occurred causing the disaster. He Insisted upon waiting until complete details were received before making a statement. Mr. De Force had left the factory only a few minutes before the acci dent. In fact, he was on his way to Astoria on board the launch Elf when he heard' the report from the explo sion. No sooner had he arrived at the deck than the report was received that his beautiful residence on Youngs bay had caught Are and was burning to the ground. The report was soon veri-' fled by telephone. . . , Mrs. De Force, It appears, was about to piepare the evening mal and had rtsrwd t flr lit the kJlehen stove." Kb had gone to another part of the hous for a moment and. upon returning to the kitchen, found the room abtase. The fre spi-ad rapidly and before umlitam-e could be secured the building was completely aflame. The building being beyond reach of the city fire de partment, nothing could be done to save It, and In a very short time it was reduced to a mass of smouldering em bers. Nothing was saved. Mrs. De Force states that she is Ut terly at a loss to know how the fire started. MOORE PASSES AWAY. Shortly before midnight Dr. Hender son notified the AstorUn that Engineer Moore had died from his Injuries. It Is evident that Moore was badly injured internally by the shock re ceived from the explosion. ACCIDENTAL DROWNING. Alfred Anderson Falls tom the Mc Gregor Trestle While at Work. Alfred Anderson fell' from the tres tle at the Astoria Box Factory about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and was drowned. Anderson, in falling, evidently struck the lluatlng plank, upon which his body wss founu, being stunned by the fall. The workmen who were present at the time state that Anderson, made no efWt to save himself and are united In the opinion that he must have been rendered senseless from the result of striking agnlnst the plank. The body was quickly recovered and every effort made to renuscltate Ander son, but in Vain. The remains were UKtn to Pohl's undertaking parlors. And jrson was well known in this city. For over eight years he was in the employ of Foard & Stok-js, In charge of their warehouse. About two months oko he severed his connection with his old-time employers and went to work for the Astoria Box Company. The deceased leaves a wife and three children, who reside In Uppertown. TRANSVAAL LOSS OF LIFE. Moralists are discussing the terrible loss of life brought about by the Transvaal war. Yet here life is sacri fleed for a purpose for an honest pria clple.
