The lale of Arran went out of port yesterday loaded until not another pound of freight could be stowed be tween deck. In fact, In the opinion of avufnrlng men, the ship waa over loaded and unh-aa It haa nice weather on the voyage, It Is probable that bad nes will be cubleil concerning her be fore sin. n-aches the home port. The Nahcotta brought 3"0 sacks of oysters from Hhoalualer bay yester day. The bivalves were conalgned to Han Francisco parties and It la re ported that the denmnd for Oregon oysters from th California metropo lis far exceeds the supply, although luige shipments are made on nearly every outgoing steamship. The Oriental stcamxhlp Monmouth shire is lying In the lower harbor wait ing for the balance of her cargo of Hour. The lighters are xp-cted to be on hand early this morning and if nil gm-s will the Monmouthshire will liave out for the Orient a?ut noon today. Mr. Kennedy, formerly fust officer, Is now master of the liner, hav ing been promoted to the poiltlon through the transfer of the former muster to another vinacl operated by Dodwell A Co. Comment I unnecessary on the fol lowing, tuken from yesterday's Oregon Ian: "The field work of surveying the river between Portland and the sea has been completed, ami Captain Lang flit, United Stales engineers, who has superintended It. discharged all the men employed except a few In his of fice making maps of the survey. With in a week Cr-plaln Langtltl will jend his report of he survey, uccompanled by maps, to Waahlngton. He says the rivers are In a very satisfactory con dition, but it will be quite an under taking to secure a 25-foot channel from Portland to the sea." Ruble barter, an Indlgwnt (Istur man, who has been residing at Clifton for sevral vears, Is an Inmate uf the county warJ nt St. Mary'e iopital, having ben ncit there yesterday by order of Sheriff Llnvllle. The eld man recently appeared before the county court, asking for assistance. Judge Gray Issued an ordr for grore-ilca and other supplies and provision was Made for the cure of the old man. U now appears, however, that Carter needs mental rather than physical treatment, It Is believed that after he has been at the hospital for a few days he .Mil be able to be about again and In good condition! Joe Grlbler, who went to Portland to hear the great pianist. Poderwelskl, re turned home yesterday enthusiastic In his praise of the great artist. A pian ist himself. Grlbler appreciated the splendid technique and execution of the "master" and pronounces him more than human In his handling of the Instrument of his choice. Grlbler re lates an amusing Incident that occured during the performance. It was Just after Poderwelskl had played, In his niurveloua style,' the Hungarian rhap osdye and there was that hush upon the audience that preceeds a burst of ap plause, that a long whiskered gentle mun arose In one of the $5 seats and,' addressing himself to Pader.velskl, said: "Say, mister, can't you give us a little 'rag time' sorter betwixt them tunes of your'n?" It Is needless to aay the question was unanswered but Pad erwelskl wns spared the labor of re-, spondlng to an encore and enjoyed the laugh as much as did the audience. Those who have subscribed for seats for the Boston Lyrlo Company's pro duction at Fisher's opera house, can reserve their seats today at Griffin & Heed's. The full company will be here during the engagement which opens on Tuesday next. Slgnor Domenlco Russo sing the title roll In "Cauallerla Rustl cana" and Miss Josephine Stanton, the title roll In "Said Pasha," The Oreg.in lun speaks of the performances as fol lows: In "Cavallerla RuBtlcatia" Slg nor Russo, Nellie Andrews, Maude Lcekley, Bertha Nllsson " and Frank Mnslln were In the cast. Miss Andrews was an acceptable Santuzxa, and ren dered that trying soprano role In a satisfactory manner. Frank Maslln Is a new baritone, and as Alflo, appeared to advantage. The performance last evening was far superior to the rendi tion of the same opera on the former occasion, the Improvement being re markable. Josephine Stanton fairly captivated th . audience In "Said rrsha," and wanjirwi Instant jecofrl nil Ion, Maud Lekley, a Altl, rang her part In a manner that left nothing to be desired with her contralto. The comedian were la their element, nev er overlooked a chance to provoke a launh-ln fact, Ihey were the greater part of th performance, with their comicalities. Ueorgy Kunkle, a II dad, and John Henderson, lis Nock-y, practically owned the !;, particu larly during the second act, and receiv ed many encorj. The costuming Is Kwd and the orchestra, reinforced, ex ecuted the music In a pleasing manner. SAJLOK8 GO TO THK MINES. Ships Held at Portland Because the Masters Are Unable to Secure Crew. According to the river pilots down from Portland there are a jiumber of ships In the stream at that port, ready to sail for home ports as soon u they can secure crews. "The scarcity of sailor In Portland la something unheard of," said the Portland pilot who brought a ship down from the city yesterday. "The scarcity of men Is due to the demand for miners at Humpter and In other mining sections In Eastern Oregon, Washington and Idaho. "Mine owners are offering as high aa $J.M jier day for able bodied men and they have drawn hundreds of sail ors away Into the mining districts. Al most any sailor can use a pick and shovi-l and the wages oflered In the mines, together with steady work on shore, appeals to the sailor far more than di-s a long and rough voyage lasting for months to some foreign port. "As an Instance of how ships are de nuded of their crews I may mention a ship now lying In the stream at Port land that had a full crew, Kicking two men,, on Monday night last and th cnptaln hud made every arrangement to go down the river n Tuesday morn ing. "Tui-rday morning came, but Instead of having a full crew, lacking two men, the captain had i nly two men on ship board, the rest having deserted during the night. "There Is nothing In the talk about sailors going out on farms. There isn't enough In It for them. They would rather salt a ship than plough any day, and. In fact, but few of them know anything about farming, but when It comes to mining It is different. In ad dition to the wage offered In the mines there Is always the bait held out that the sailor can go prospecting for him self and U aa liable to find a million dollar mine a anybody else. "When winter comes, the sailor drift back Into the seaports and usually fall to find ships, leaving them paupers on the community until shipping (.pens In the spring, but the sailor Is notirious ly an Improvident creature nnd only care for the present,-letting the fu ture take rare of itself. '.The boarding-house men are at their wit's end, as the saying goes, trying to upply crews. The sailors are not to be found in town and hence cannot be hired or shanRhuied. I doubt very much whether the ships now ready to sail will be able to get crews this week. If they do they will pay an Increase over regulation wages. RACED I P THE RIVER. The Mller and Nahcotta Try Conclu sions of Sp-.-ed The Latter Boat Wins the First Heat. When that trim craft, the R. Mller. left for llwaco Wednesday. It looked aa sic and span aa fresh paint and a generous application of the scrubbing brush, with soap and water, could make It look. Yesterday the Mller looked as If It had caught the ragged edge of a ty phoon. Its beautiful yellow smoke stack was of a nondescript color, with blisters of paint clinging to It here and there, while spashes and splotches of soot were smeared on the snowy decks and on the erstwhile pure sides of the superstructure. In fact the Mller look ed as If it had seen "active service," And It had. The change was brought about by a difference of opinion between Captain Babidge of the Miler and Cnptaln Tom Parker of the Nahcotta, aa to the rela tive speed of their respective boats. Now, racing on the river Is frowned down by the captains of every sort of craft and Indulged In whenever an op portunity offers. H so happened that the Mller and the Nahcotta both left llwaco at about the same hour on Wednesday, the latter boat being a trifle behind. At McGowan's the boats were together and then there was started one of the prettiest races seen on the river In many a day. All hands and the cook, on both boats, were at work In the fire room and the engines were made to develop every pound bf speed In them. Soon the heat began to cook the new paint on the Mller'a smokestack and great chunks of soot were fired out of the stack to-cling to the deck or sides or wherever they could find a lodgement so aa to spoil paint, but the boats raced on, regardless of appearances. According to the self constituted Judges on the dock here the Nahcotta won the race by several hundred yards and consequently has "a horse" to Its credit In the game which the two boats will surely 'play out during the season. It was imposaiDie 10 gei me best time, for a given distance, made by etther of the boats but It Is safe to say they kept the salmon running to keep up wltl) them coming Into port. The Mller'a stack will get a new coat of yellow today and thla time It will be of fire proof paint ao no matter whether the flames stick out of the top of the chimney 'or not, the stack, will look all right when the race I over.
