Jollity and exhuberant health are a pro ' verbial combination. The hearty man wh is always laughing doesn't have any trouble with bis digestion. It bas been said thai laughing makes people healthy. The truti is that health makes people laugh. It is impossible to estimate the tre mendous influence of health upon bmnan character. A man with a headache will not be in a happy, contented frame of mind. A man who suffers from a weak stomach and an impaired digestion will sit and a-rumble through the best meal ever prepared. A bilious man who is not a bore, is deserving of a place in a museum. A nervous man who is not petulent and fault-finding is a curiosity. All these con ditions lead to grave diseases, when the victim becomes not only disagreeable, but dependent as well. A wise wife will real ize that while the old saying that a ' man's heart is in his stomach," is not literally true, it is a fact that his stomach sweetens or sours his character according as it is healthy or unhealthy. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery is the best of medicine for the conditions described. It makes the weak stomach strong, the impaired digestion perfect, invigorates the liver, purifies and enriches the blood and tones the nerves. It tear down half-dead, inert tissues and replaces them with the firm muscular tissues of health. It builds new and healthy nerve fibres and brain cells. It dissipates nervousness and melancholy and imparts mental elasticity and courage. It is the best of all known medicines for nervous disorders. "TO THYSELF BE TRUE." ! ti .. ii ' Thomas B. Reed Says Selfishness Is the Mainspring of Progreas. NEW YORK, Jan. 17.-Thomas B. Reed, speaking at the annual meet ing of the University Settlement Society, Is In this city, said that he had always been attracted by the study of what wthat might be termed the Genesis of the human race and, In fact, he had talked and written a great deal more on the subject than he ever knew, trying to put prophesy in the place of knowledge. "Theire is something in the nature of, man," he said, "that makes us stop and succor the weaker man or, if we do not, we suffer pains and penalties ourselves. Men ere bound together I say, by the Almighty. If not out of courtesy or kindliness, then for our own sake, we must help our friends, It Is not merely charity which con strains us it Is something stronger selfishness the gw-at master of the human race. "Selfishness will accomplish more than the saintller virtues. So It Is to the Interest of each one of us that all should be lifted to our own level. And that Interest certainly applies to this spot, where there are more people to the square mile, I had almont said to the square yard, than anywhere olM on the globe." Mr. Reed then discussed the old question a to why people will flock to the cities In spite of the fact that poets tn all agvs have sung the uper- i,r advantages of the country, and all literature Is filled with accounts of the squalor of the cities. As an Illus tration of the difficulty of raising peo ple to the higher level ho spoke of thO( flight progress by the first gyration of negro, born since the. civil war. I So w ith th first serious effort to edu cate the Indians. "Vo educated one here and there,' said Mr. Reed, "and then sent them back to their own country exulting them to clvlllro the others. We did n- knew that it took education to appreciate education. There should be education enough to kvep the others In contenance or none at alk All over the world we must work to bring cur fellows forward. That, la fact, is the one great work of men, and all earthly mouments wilt pass away before the results- of work of that kind will cease, for whenever i man ctases to help his fellow the race will be no mow." men, i A PATRIOTIC HEBREW.
