Mrs. John Cats", of 239 Dearbord avenue, was seised by robbers dhortly after mid. niffht at Chestnut street near North Clarke street, thrust Into a cab and afterward robbed of diamonds valued at J600. She was brutally beaten, her hands lacerated and her face bruised. She was so badly hurt and so badly overcome that she la almo6t prostra ted. Mrs. Corse, who is 26 years of age. came to Chicago recently from California for the purpose of studying elocution. Wednesday evening she at tended an entertainment on the West side, returning to her apartments about midnight She was feeling ill and went to a drugstore about two blocks from where sha lives. Tliie store, however, was closed and Mrs. Corse started for home. She hud not proceeded half a block homeward, when, according to the story she told to the police, she was seized from be hind by two men who drove up In a cab and they thrust her into the vehicle, stlflling her cries and drove atvay at a rapid gait. Th- cab was driven to a resort near Clark and Division st re-Ms. The wo man was forced to enter the building and being too ill and frightened to mak? an outcry she was partly car ried and partly dragged. Here an effort was made to secure the dia monds she had worn to the entertain ment in the evening, and which the still had on. The gems were set in a brooch. The brooch was secured, but the rings were tight and could not easily be removed from the fin gers. The robbars thn procured a pair cf plnchars and wrenclu-d the diamonds from their settings. While this was going on, Mrs. Corse re sisted as best Bhe could, but found herelf almost powerless in the grasp of the men. After the robbery she was again put in the cab and, in response to her pleading she was tak en to her boarding house in Dearborn avenue. . The robbery was reported to the po The little Dutch boy who stopped the leak in the dike with his finger saved his country from over whelming destruc tion. You have read about hi in in your school readers, how he was walking along the due when be heard a faint sound of trickling water. and knew at once that a leak had sprang in that great embank ment which saves Holland from the devas tations of the hungry sea It was early in the night, and no one was near at hand. The leak was small when he found it, but he knew that the action of the water would enlarge it long before morning, and wash way the entire embankment, inundate the country and destroy his own and thou sands of homes. So he bravely put his ringer in the crevasse, and kept it there all the long night through, until help came and the opening was properly stopped. He had saved his country. Equally insignificant is the entrance of disease into the human system. The be ginnings of the most terrible ailments are so small tbey can be easily stopped at the Hart. Your health is a dike which keeps r ut and stops the inroads of dangerous and devastating disease. Whenever it breaks down, no matter how slightly, there is an opening for disease to enter. If the open ing is not watched, it will grow larger, until the sweep of disease overwhelms you, and health and perhaps life is de stroyed forever. Fortify your health with Dr. Pierce's Golden.. ilcdicil Di&rnvrry. and, you can ' defy ill-bcaltli. You can make your health so sYrong-a bulwark that disease cannot find a crevice through which it can creep. Taken in time, Dr. Pierce's remedies pre vent greater and more serious troubles. Hundreds write daily to Dr. Pierce, telling him how ihee remedies have saved them and made them strong. Constipation causes and aggravates many serious diseases. It is speedily cured by Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets, lice. The story was regarded as a strange one by the officers but the victim repslted her assertions and showed her lacerated hands ami thv rings wKh the empty settings to prove her statements. Detectives were detailed on the case. The only theory that would fit the case is that the diamonds worn by Mrs. Corse wre exposed to view while she was trying to get Into the drugstore in North Clark street and th.it she was followed by the men in the cab. The Chicago avenue po lice are pui2led over the arTUr. Beside the diamonds, her nt-cket book, containing o in money and a draft for 1250, was also taken. Mrs. Mrs. Corse's hume is in San Fran cisco. KID MOOT WINNER. A Fake Fight in Which Clioylnski Apparently Loses. NEW YORK. Jan. 12.-Kid McCoy gcrt th decision over Joe Chynski in a bout which lasted three rounds at the Broadway Athletic Club tonight. Choylnskl would have hal the fight in the cond round had it not ben fen- an accident "ts to the timekeep ing. Ke had floored th Kid four times, but the timekeeper pulled the bell as McCoy was counted for the limit of ten sevonds and this saved the kid fix-m absolute defeat. Chcvnki's seconds protested vigorously but Re feree Johnny White, while knowing the round was short by lnmy ; onds, stood by the official timekeeper and crdered the men. to continue when the gong rang again for the opening of the third round. Chnynskl's cleverness outpointed and outshadowed all of McCoy's clev er ring work; McCoy having escaped defeat in th second round was again lucky In the third round, as the blow with which he sent Choynskl down and out was delivered almost two cond after the bell had rung for the completion of the third round. There was a great deal of noise in the building at the time the gong sounded and undoubt edly neither man heard the clang of the bell. In the northeast portion of the build ing there was a tumult caused by one of the spectators dropping dead. The man was very much excited during the bout and expressed himself freely as to McCoy's being out before the bell rang. He slid fflom his swit Jead as the bell sounded for the beginning of the third round. Colonel Mike Padden, timekeeper for McCoy, said afterward that the round was clipped by forty seconds. That McCoy was groffjy and practi cally out when the gong sounled. Choynskl, while feeling rather gore, said that he had no fault to find with the referee, and In conversation with the latter exonerated White from all blame. After the bout Choynskl and McCoy signed articles to meet again under the same conditions at the Broadway Athletic Club, February 20. KEY TO THE ORIENT.
