Al a lute hour last night the As torlall received the following dls- putoh from Seattle: "The lSrlUnh steuniHhlp Elm Uranch ia off Cape Fluttery with broken propeller and two tugs have gone to her assist. snce. There is a noticeable aoilvlty in the timber-lands market, as tvldor.ced by the late Mings In the county record ers omce. Most of the transfers. however, have bieen made to Urge companies or syndicates. The day of snaps' In Oregon and Washington timber lands Is rapidly passing, and from now on available properties will necessarily have to be handled by men of some capital. It has been practi cally certain for years that the mer chantable tlmbvr of the Northwewt must noon be placed upon a much higher plane of values, and the up ward movement now in . progress will Inaugurate an era In which logging and milling methods must be altered from the prodigal destruction of what has heretofore been considered waste. The trip of the tramp eteanvr Arab, whloh came down the river from Portland Thursday with flour and wheat for the Orient, has grown to more than more passing import ance. Comment was first made be cause of the ffaot that the steamer was obliged to come down light, tak ing on nearly ia thousand tons of hor cargo ait "the Flavel doek. In an nouncing her departure from up the Arab drew lust than either of the above figures Indicate, the records j showing it to be exactly twenty-two I feet and ten Inches. Mu-r all Is saldj and done, the fact remain that the Arab, hnd she :akcn o.i her cargo at Astoria Instead of gol:.g 100 miles Into ths Interior, would fcave been over the bar and on her way rejoicing in steaJ of lying Idle at Flavel waiting for better weather. But ales! George S. Fouts, of Portland, who has gained considerable of a local reputation as a mechanical Inventor, has Just patented a gold dredger which he Intends putting at work ait Cape Nome ss soon as a company can be organised. The dredger Is, in principle, not unlike those of the reg. ulation scuttle variety, but the meth od of operation which l especially adapted to operations In the Cape Nome district, Is quite an Intricate affair. The dredger Is situated on a scow thirty-six feet long and twenty four feet wide, elevated on twelve huge roller-wheels at a height of twelv feet from the ground. The rcow is run Into the stream by means of a oible which Is securely anchored both in mldirtresm and on shore, lo comotion being secured by means of special machinery on board tho scow. Thus the apparatus may be moved into the water or withdrawn to the beuch at will. A number of buckets, having an Individual capacity of one cubic f xt, dump the sand and gravel Into a ' grlxzly" at the rate of fifteen fett a minute. The "grixil-." in ru rotation, carries oft the dirt, allowing the gold to work through its Siive like surface upon laterals whence it it carried through the proces of amal gamation. Mr. Foute is very enthus iastic over the prospects for his new Invention, which he claims has a capacity of working ovor S00 cubic yar.ls a day. The beat estimates place the value of the beach sand at Cape Nome at 13 a cubic yard.
