THE ASHLAND FRIDAY TIDINGS v ......... may 2», isso TI1E COUNTY TICKETS. Brought up to swallow every thing which the ring may label “straight Democracy,” without i the hardihood to inquire as to the quality of the dose, the l ing organ at Jacksonville could not be ex pected to understand what inde pendence is, and hence we aifc not surprised when it exhibits its in capacity to comprehend our posi tion. Its editor evidently thinks that no newspaper can exist which does not Wear the collar of one or the other of the parties, and when it sees that we are not be tween the same traces that leave their marks upon its fat sides, it very naturally supposes us to be driven by the other party. Well, we can’t blame Nickell very •? much. His nature is but human. The ring pours money into his pockets, and lie fears that any thing like independence on the part of the voters will endanger the success of the candidates the ring has ordained. Hence he says: Be united, even though it be in bondage and against the best interest of the county. This is a position dangerous to the success of his party. People will think sometimes. Let him show that the candidates he is compelled to support are the best in the field, or the best that his party could supply, and then he will present a good reason why they should re ceive our suffrages. It is not suffi cient tosay that! heir nomination has given them every qualification for oflice. People are beginning to understand how the nominating machines work. The Illinois Republican State convention, which met at Spring field on the 20th, declared Grant to be its choice, by a vote of 386 to 307. This,it is generally sup posed, will give Grant the nomina tion on the first ballot; and poli ticians are beginning to settle themselves for the contest with Grant and Tilden as the figure heads. * E.
