PAGE SIX LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER. TOLEDO, OREOON. THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 16. 1922. EDM) BHILOM G LOCAL ROADS FOR LONG HAUL Highway Now Being Improved aiteold Be Designed to Care fcr In crease In Traffic. tPrtptred by th United Stitei Drpaftmsnt of Agriculture.) The United Stutes Is now In n period Of great highway development, nnd In a few years many roads, which now carry only local truffle originating largely within five or ten miles of the road, will be currying a large percent age of through traffic, much of it com. lng from outside the stale. This Is the opinion of oflieluls of the hureuu of public roads, United Stntcs Depart ment of Agriculture, based upon the report of two truffle censuses taken by the bureau in co-operntion with the atute highway department of Connecti cut. The roads selected were part of a fairly complete system of highways. The first census showed nn average of 2,1)07 passenger cars and 281 trucks passing the recording station a day; and the second, 3.832 curs und Oil trucks. Forty-seven per cent of the cars came from within , the stale. Driven were questioned as to length of travel for the duy, and results showed averuge figures of 70 miles and 62.4 miles for the two censuses. The averuge haul for truck truffle wns 47.5 miles, some of them hauling a distance of 2.ri0 miles. Officials point out that truffle of this nature has de veloped lii a period of something like ten vpur "n n rond whMi prior to COW TESTING BENEFITS HERD Profitable Results Obtained by Mem bers of Organization In Wis consin Community. (Prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture.) "As members of the Cedar Grove cow-testing association for the pnst three nnd one-half years Ve hnve ob tained some protltiihie results," writes the owner of a Wisconsin furm to a I field ngent of the Dairy Division of the United States Department of Agri culture. "When we stnrted, our herd averaged 11.S29 pounds of milk and 410.2 pounds of butter fat. while last year our average was 13,737 pounds of milk nnd 502.2 pounds of butter fat. We were encouraged by our tester to mix our rations before feeding and to milk some of our cows three times .... .--.' A Federal-Aid Gravel Road. 11)10 carried almost entirely local traf. flc. It must be concluded, therefore, they say, that roads which are now be ing Improved to form part of through highway routes should be designed to take care of a great deul more than the local traffic or Hurt which Is ex pected to orlginato locally with the coming of better rouds. WORE WAR EQUIPMENT READY L:rge Amount of Lumber and Other Material Made Available for ' Road Construction. Five million board feet of lumber and $220,000 worth of other surplus v.r material, consisting of steam and gas engines nnd nmchlnc-shop equip ment, all unused, recently was .made available to state highway depart ments for road construction. The material Is to he distributed by the bureau of public rouds, United States l'purtment of Agriculture, va were large quantities which were helpful to many states in road building last seu vn. Most of the lumber was Intended by the army for the construction of it pier nt Charleston, S. C, nnd is sult-nl-le for highwiiy bridges. The tnn ci.lnery anil equipment are stored us ordnance supplies tit the I'lcatlnny nrsentil, Dover, Del. Tills material is particularly In demand and an allot ment has been requested by euch of the 48 states. FRENCH ROADS BROKE Some persons have pointed to the macadam roads of Prance as the type of roads that America should adopt. Yet these persons have, perhaps, not thoroughly In vestigated present conditions. These roads, which have been a matter of pride to France for centuries, are nil maintained by patrolmen. Each man. devotes his time the year around to the keeping up of a fevr hundred yards of roadway. But, even so, these rouds wont to pieces when heavy trntllc wus put on them during the war. These rouds were built for horse and foot traffic, and served tnut purpose very well, but motor lorries, guns, etc., cut up these roads quickly. Prevent Road Destruction. In campaign to prevent destruc tion of the highways by overland vehicles, the state department of pub lic works of Massachusetts has In spectors stationed on all of the Im portant traffic routei lo the state for the purpose of weighing the loads of motor trucks. day, wmcn in one instance Dronnc an Increase in production of over 3,000 pounds of milk In the year. "Another problem our tester helped os solve was our calf feeding. He encouraged us to mix a good calf ra tion, and our calves hare grown as much as two and one-hslf pounds a lectin Association Helps farmer w Increase the Milk Flow By Better Feeding. day. Cow testing also showed the dif ference In the profits of the different cows. Some of the cows mode two and one-half times as much as other individuals do. "It was through the tester's sug gestion that we started In with pure bred cattle In earnest, and some day we are going to have a good pure-bred herd. Another thing the testing showed us is that we hud sold a regis tered bull to be slaughtered which had five daughters that nvornged over 13, 300 pounds of milk and 625 pounds of butter fat. A lesson like this one will be remembered a long time. "Putting It in few words, our asso ciation work helped us to feed, care fox. and Imnrovn our cattle nnd stndv ORIGINAL ESTIMATE UND ACCOUNTING SHEET, LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON.
