Tuesday morning the trip to Newport was . made. me sine through district six, Joe Park hurst supervisor. Z..C. Cope land erried us across to South Beach and Lee Doty hitched his team onto the . machine and towed us .through the loose sand to the plank road leading to the beach. Arriving at the Alsea bay we were again towed tnrougn tne loose sand by a Mr Downs and Johnny. Ludemann ferried us across to Waldport, where we arrived about eleven o'clock. Waldport appeared to be pret ty lively in spite .of the quiet times in other sections. The two salmon tanneries and the sawmill were operating and the town was full of Summer vis itors. - After a fine dinner at The Wakefield the run down the beach to Yachats was made. The Yachats river was forded and we continued down the coast , on the new government road around Cape Perpetua, where the road clings to the face of a sheer rock wall some two hundred feet above the sea. Soon after prising the Cape we came to the Lane county line, but the road was so narrow that we had to go over in Lane county about a mile before we could turn around. After turning around we again returned to the Yachats river and stayed at the Ocean View Hotel over night. Wednesday morning we went up the Yachats valley some 12 miles, then over Yachats Moun tain. This valley lies in dist rict 19, Jim Harrison supervisor. The road up the valley is a fine graveled road on a good grade, but the road over Yachats Mountain is one of the worst mountain roads In the county. It Is six miles over the mountain and the road Is very crooked J U UV&CU I Two wagon wun steen trades. loads of campers have upset in coming over the mountain this Summer. The worst part of the road lies in Lane county. A new road has been surveyed and will be built soon. The road on the east side of the mountain enters district 1, W. C. Skaggs supervisor. We now Journeyed up Five River to the Lane county hne. A gentle man by the name of Cox talked with the Court with regard to a new bridge over rive Rivers. Mr. Cox made quite an impres sion on the Court Coming down Five Rivers we took dinner at Deuzer, then con tinued on down the river to where it empties into the Alsea river, We now turned east up the Alsea river in district four, Claire Trenhohn supervisor. At the Benton county line we again turned around and came back down the Alsea river to Wald port. About two miles below Tidewater 'we were ferried across the river by James Kent, then after traveling on the gov ernment road for a couple of miles we came Into district two, Fred Liiethe supervisor. In the Alsea valley above Tide water we noticed a number of boys and girls gathering ' fox glove seeds from the plants on the hillsides, and upon -Inquiry being made 'we learned that they found ready sale lor these seeds at the price of cents per pound, they being UBed for med icinal purposes. ' " After staying over night at Waldport we ferried ay to Lutgens "and came over jtne bina tx Toledo, passing luruugn district a, Fred Mc Willis BunervlsOr. district 2ft R R: Howe supervisor, district 6, .vv. yvener supervisor, and dist net 9, J. II. Suez Bunervinor We arrived nhnnt finnn at tlia .Geo. Selby ranch on Beaver creek, where at the invitation of Mr. Selby we partook of a fine dinner. Mr. Selby owns one of the finest ranches in the Beaver creek section, and his straw berry vines are fidl of large ripe berries at this late season. . We came on 16 Tpledo In the afternoon arriving at the ferry landing on the south side of the hay about three o'clock, and were ferried across. to Toledo about three o'clock the following afternoon, Just 2i hours after we arrived. The County Court Is greatly .impressed with the need of a bridge at this point and It will LINCOLN undoubtedly be built next sen.. son.
