Government Dredge Working The government dredge Oregon, which has been here for the past month, begun working Wednesday, and is now steadily pumping the mud from the bottom of the river just below town. Since coming here the dredge bad been making repairs, getting ready for steady work. She had to wait a few days for some parts of the pump which was being repaired at Portland. After cutting off a considerable of the point just opposite the port docks which will require several days' work ns the bank is rather high and there in a large pile of dirt which was thrown there by the port dredge, the Oregon will probably confine its work to deepen ing the channel from just above the sawmill here, to the lower end of the port district near Oyster City and deep water. She will deepen the channel all the way to ten feet at low tide and make the channel 200 feet wide. This will admit all vessels crossing in over the Yaquina bar to come direct to Toledo. The members of the local port commission are to be congratulated in their efforts in interesting the government in this work, and it proves that the forming of the To ledo port district a few years ago was a good move for the entire bay. For without this effort of our people we would still be howl ing for the government to help us out. We have been helping our selves and now the government is recognizing us. ELECTION NOTICE.
