F. O. Jones, rector of St. Stehpen's Episcopal church of New port, had a narrow escape from drowning while returning on horse back from Otter Rock last Friday, says a Newport correspondent to thePcrtlani Journal, an unusual ly high tide augmented by the high wind overflowed .the whole beach. Mr. Jones misread the tidetable and started an hour too early. Round ing a point about six miles north he saw a ternffic comber sweeping in. He had difficulty in getting his feet out of the stirrups, and the wave rolled horse and rider over and over. The wafter was full of tim bers, and one struck him a blow on the ankle and another hit him a terriffic blow under the eye, lacer ating his face and partially stunn ing him. He was unable to climb the slippery cliff and was being swept to sea when he caught on a submerged rock. When the waves receded he managed to reach the bank and climbed to a ledge about 30 feet up and protected by an out standing rock. The horse mean while was safe "part way up the rock. Here Mr. Jones hung one hour and fcrty-five minutes, every wave reaching nearly to his feet, lie had been there about an hour when he saw the largest breaker he had ever seen sweep in, and he had about given up hopes. The wave swept up the clifr 40 feet and swept every log off the beach, but struck the outstanding rock at such an angle it split and passed on both sides of him. In the dark he missed the road home and wandered an hour and a half. While not ser iously injured, Mr. Jones is suffer ing seriously from bruises and ex posure.
