The color of gem stones, although of greatest importance commercially, Is of little or no value In determining their particular identity. Certain stones show their characteristic shades of color, it is true, but it Is only after 'various tests have been applied that color can be considered at all as evidence of value. All min erals In their pure state are pure white, and the color shown is due to mineral pigment in many cases. Constipation causes many serious dis eases. It is thoroughly cured by Doc tor Pierce's Pleasant Pellets. One 8 laxative, three for cathartic. Real Epochs of Life. Real action is in silent momenta The epochs of our life ere not In th visible facts of our choice of a calling, our marriage, our acquisition of an office, and the like, but in a silent thought by the wayside as we walk; In a thought which revises our entire manner of life and says: "Thus hast thou done, but It were better thus.' Emerson. May Be Overdone. : Bishop Wlllard F. Mallallen, at a idinner, defended the laws against Sun day breaking,- Indecent literature, etc. "But these laws," objected a sociolo gist, "undermine our freedom." "Free dom," said Bishop Mallalleu, "is a good -thing, but let us not make too much of It In Pennsylvania, for instance, a man is free to marry his mother-in-law, but no man ever does." SI00SO 9t OIYII I n roRTLAMD, osiaos ATTENTION TO FARM TEAMS Horses Need Careful Feeding and Care During Hot, Sultry Summer Days Give Water Frequently. The farm, work horse requires care ful feeding, care and general atten tion In hot. sultry weather. Use only the light harness. Leather nets or a gauno sack cut open thrown over the back of the horse and allowed to come down over the legs will keep off the files. Steel collars are now used by the large truck companies. They are lighter, keep cleaner, last longer and are a great comfort to the horse. . . Discard the check rein. The most economical and the best summer grain feed Is two-parts oats, one part corn and a small quantity of wheat bran, with good mixed bay. A horse at steady work should he given 15 or 16 pounds of oats dally; but better than all oats Is two-thirds oats and one-third cotn. Bran' should be given with an oat and timothy hay ration. Equal parts of corn and sweet wheat bran may be given lrstead of oats and corn. By adding one pound of flaxseed meal a better and strong er feed ' may be had at slight cost. A mlied ration Is much beter than one of a grain. Give well-cured mixed hay. Musty hay is liable to produce colic. Green feed Is too laxative. Feed small quan tities and only after it Is well wilted. Work horses should not be turned to pasture at night after a hard day's work. Grass alone will not keep up their strength or condition. After a day's work Is over put the team in a cool, clean, well-aired -table, giving a thick bed of dry straw. When the teams' are brought in at night wash the sweat and dirt from the shoulders and legs and rub dry. Dally carding, brushing and rubbing makes a horse feel beeter, keeps him in better health and renders him in every way a bet ter and steadier worker. Rest the team occasionally, water frequently, giving small quantities at a time. A horse should never be watered or fed when overheated; let him cool otf first In extremely hot weather like we have had the last few weeks early and late, rest both man and team in the middle of the hottest portion of day. A team well fed and hu manely used can be worked without injury, even If the j work Is severe and the weather hot We should take all reasonable care of the farm horse, aiming to keep him In the best of health, strength and spirits for as long a period ot profit able service as possible. Thoughtless persons do not appreciate what an active factor in farm Industry ttie horse actually is until deprived of his services. A steady team can be de pended upon, that the farmer fully knows, is worth the best of care, and cannot easily be replaced even If the farmer "has money to burn." GOOD SEED WHEAT AND OATS They Should Be Cut While In Dough 6tage and Well Dried Worth $1.25 Per Bushel at Farm. Wheat and oats for seed should be cut when in the dough stage, make small sheaves, set up In medium-sized shocks and as soon as the grain is bard and the straw dry, haul in and place the load on the top of mow, where it can be dry and free from heating. Have it thrashed out sep arately; the thrasher should be cleaned out before the grain. Is gone throughvtne machine. Heavy, plump, clean grain, free from all Impurities, is worth $1.25 per bushel at the farm. Dealers are ask ing $1.60 per bushel. . By careful selection and grading of the grain, the same variety of wheat may be grown on the farm for a num ber of years without the grain deterior ating In yield or quality. Oats, on the other hand, will fall off In yield, weight and quality of grain after the second year. Expert growers buy northern-grown seed oats for drilling every second year. Oats grown In the mountain counties of Pennsyl vania wnere ue soli is moist and the climate cool when the grata is head ing out, are Said to be nearly as heavy and as prolific as the Michigan and Vermont frown oats. There Is a loss of grain and ger minating vigor of the seed by allow ing either wheat or oats to become dead ripe before harvesting. Fish for Fertilizer. Oft the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador, the waters swarm with a little silvery fish known as the cap lun. The fish Is edible, being much like the sardine in texture. So far, though, no attempt at shipment has been made, and so the fish are sub stantially wasted. In season, how ever, the Newfoundland farmers east nets and band'up huge quantities of these caplun. They are then taken In low carts out onto the fields, and there, alive still, tbey ( are scattered over the meadows, to decay and serve as fertilizer. Crop Rotation. Crop rotation belongs to any sys tem which seeks to better tha soil The 0TnreeeTofi I. ,u:. i:.ui " " t assist s bimuio rcnicuy. SICK WnmaTjf a tnxrltA aA .A....U I .. ... feen - Wr,d ? Pens.ry R. V. Regularity In feeding is of much Importance. If it can be so arranged as to feed at 8 o'clock In the morning and 4 o'clock in the afternoon. It Is about the best that can be done. No live stock will make better use of a few turnips or other roots, in winter, than will breeding ewes. It Is advis able, too, to give them a little grain. It helps them wonderfully. If the flockmaster knows Just when to ex pect lambs he can often save the life of a nice lamb by watchfulness and a little care at the right time in seeing that the mother takes due care of It Possibly he may lose a few hours' sleep during the Beason, but when he comes to sell the lambs and put the price in his pocket, he can reflect that this lost sleep Is paid for. Work and Prayer. Work with all your might; but trust not In the least In your work. Pray with all your might for the blessing of God; but work, at the same time, with all diligence, with all patience, with all perseverance. Pray, then, and work. Work and pray. And still again pray and work, and this all the days of your life. George Muller. ' Earth's Core. At a meeting of a scientific socleH at The Hague Professor Welchert as serted that his studies of the varying velocity or earthquake tremors, pass ing through the interior ot the globe, lead to the conclusion that the earth consists of a central core of iron or steel, about 6,580 miles In diameter. A 8llly Season Qlft "Take your wife a silly season gift it a half dozen assorted sealing wax candles," the salesman said. "But I don't know what sealing wax sandles are," the patron objected. "This Is what they are." The sales man produced a neat box. "They are ticks of sealing wax, each contain ing a wick. You light the wick when you want to seal a letter; the wax melts and drops off, and when you tiave got enough for your seal you blow out the flame. A sealing wax ndle saves the expense and bother 9f a second candle. Won't you take pour wife a silly season gift ot a boxr "But" objected the patron, "I don't think that It Is either customary or leslrable to give wives presents In the silly season."
