Mrs. Charles Litchfield of Ya quina visited here with her parents Saturday. Cliff Crosno was a passenger for Portland Saturday morning where he will take in the Rose Show. John Ebbe, the road builder, came over from Dallas Monday evening to look after the road work here. County Commissioner C. N. Thompson came up from Waldport Tuesday morning to look after county matters. Mrs. S. A. Pruett of Yaquina and Mrs. G. C. Walker of Toledo went to Portland Tuesday morning to at tend the Rose Carnival. Rev. Pcarce of Siletz filled the I pulpit in the local M. E. church last 'Sunday morning and evening, in l the place of Rev. Devenport, who was visiting with his family at Cor vallis. Hans Peterson the jeweler was a visitor to the Rose Festival at Port land this week, also attending the Jewelers Convention held at that place. He returned home last evening. Postmaster Arnold has completed the count of the number of pieces of mail handled by the local post office during the month of May. His count is as follows: Outgoing 14,284; incoming 20,509. I. R. Wishart last week purchased a lot from Mrs. W. C. Hoeflein on Seventh street near Hill street, ad joining the Wm. Enos residence, and will immediately commence the erection of a fine bungalow. In the ball game here last Sun day Elk City won by a score of 7 to 8. Siletz won in the scoring up to the ninth inning, when the score was tied, 7 to 7. In he tenth inning Silez was unable to score while Elk City chased in the winning run. A launch party went up the river above the Government rock quarry last Sunday for a picnic. The party consisted of Mr. and Mrs. R. P Goin, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Newton Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Arnold, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Akin, Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur Nye. Hall of Siletz, W. F. Wakefield of (Eddyville, Dr. Minthorn, of Newport, and J. H. Glines of Waldport, met at the county school superintendent's offi ce last Monday afternoon and elec ted George Bethers as School super visor for this county. There were three .applications for the position. The new law relating to the crea tion of the county Board of Educa tion and School Supervisor is as fol lows: There is hereby created in every county of the state of Ore gon containing more than sixty schools districts a county educa tional boad consisting of the county school supeintendent who shall be ex-officio chairman of the board and four members appointed by the school superintendent. The school superintendent shall appoint on or before June 1, 1911, and every four years thereafter, four persons to act as members of the county educa tional board who shall serve for four years or until their successors Vion o it o 1 lfi nd 'FVini' cViol 1 rofifti'vn no compensation for any service as members of the board; provided, however, that the necessary travel ing expenses of each member in curred in the discharge of his duties shall be audited and paid as are other claims against the county; provided, further, that the annual expenses of each member shall not exceed $25. The duties of the county educa tional board in regard to the super visory district shall be as follows: To employ supervisors, other than the county school superintendent which supervisors shall be employed for not less than ten months each year, at not less than $100 nor more than $120 per month. The duties of the supervisor shall be as follows: To work under the direction of the county school sup erintendent and to attend to such meetings as he may call. To de vote his entire time to superintend ing the schools in the supervisory district for which he is employed, whenever any of the schools in his district are in session. To en force the course of study prescribed by the State Board of Education. The selection of Mr. Bethers for this position was a good selection. Mr. Bethers is one of the oldest school teachers in the county. He was county school superintendent of this county for twelve or more years and has taught school continuously here for the past twenty odd years. He is well versed in school laws and school work. He made the county a good superintendeent for years and can be dependepd upon to make a good supervisor. Al Taylor, the Siletz farmer, was renewing acquaintances in Toledo over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Carey are in Portland this week, taking in the Rose Carnival. Miss Frances Avery went to Port- 1 1 1 a . a land ivionciay morning to spend a week at the Rose Cranival. E. H. Vader, the Eddyville ' mer chant, and son were Toledo visitors from Saturday evening until Sunday evening. Prof. A. H. Weber and family went to Brownsville Monday morn ing, where they will remain until the middle of August. Walter Keck the famous football player, visited in Toledo Sunday night with his old teacher, County Treasurer McCluskey. Already requests for concessions are being received by the Fair com mittee. There is no doubt that there will be plenty "of attractions at the Fair this coming September. It is hoped by the committee that the attraction of a flying machne will be added.
