Last year the commercial clubs of the county paid' the Southern Pacific company 'nearly $1000 to advertise Lincoln county. That $1000 has been the means of adding at least $200,000 to the wealth of county, besides bringing hundreds of people to the county who have Been the advantages this county has over the East and have" remained to make their homes here. All we need to do to increase our popula tion is to tell the Eastern people of our county. They will do the rest. Let's advertise. The Executive Committee of the Fair and Festival held their final meeting last Tuesday evening. At this meeting all committees for the different work were appointed and all final arrangements were made This committee has worked faith fully during the past several months and now it is up to the people of the county to do their part in making this fair what it should be. The meeting lasted till 11 o'clock .Several enthusiastic citizens were present. The several committees will be published in next week's issue. The State Fair of Oregon is crow ing rapidly, keeping apace with the general improvements of our State. and attempting to encourage the developemcnt of agriculture in all its branches. Much encouragement has been given to the State Board of Agriculture by the legislature. largely due to the assistance of the press of the state. Funds thus se cured have been expended verv satisfactory to the people at large and for such expenditures will be found on the State Fair grounds. many permanent buildings and other substantial improvements that gives this State institution much more prominence and importance. In another column Hans Olson protests against the action of the committee appointed at the last meeting of the Toledo Development League to draft resolutions to our representatives protesting . gainst the report of the Unitod States en. gineors condemning the Olalla dik ing project. Why does Mr. Olson hinglo out the committee for bia attack? This committee was simply appointed to express the sentiment of the Development Lenguo, which is composed of the public spirited men of Toledo and the surrounding country. By vote these men con demn the action of Mr. Olson in fighting the project. He wants the law upheld. Hasn't the law been upheld? The residents of Olalla have acted in good faith and have complied with ti e v in theirevery action. Tlio state laws permitted tliem to build this dam, the County Court mado orders allowing tho work. Where are thoy violating the law? Mr. Olson, by his silenco, I imself sanctioned the project un til by an unavoidable accident the work was portly washed out somo months ago. When this dam was washed out tho pooplo of Olulla got busy and lxgan rebuilding. Now hero comes along the U, g, engineers and report adversely on the work. Miss Esther Copelang is visiting with her mother at Siletz. Mrs. Fred Stanton and daughter, Edna, departed yesterday morning for British Columbia. Bud Davis, son of Tracy Davis of South Beach, died at' Broughten Island, B. C, July 29, of heart failure. Henry Gannon has been visiting during the past two weeks in Wash ington and Idaho. He will return home tomorrow. Bidwdl, California, where she is engaged in the Indian service, for a visit with her brothers Warren and Walter Hall, at Siletz. Miss Hall taught school in .Toledo a few years ago. . Died At his home in Yaquina, Wednesday, August 4, 1909, Alfred Toner, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Toner, of typhoid fever. Alfred had been sick for several weeks. He was a promising young man and his untimely death is a shock to his many friends. Mayor R. A. Bensell, of Newport was in the city this wee k to attend the meeting of the executive com mittee of the fair and festival. Mr. Bensell informs us that the city of Newport has just voted bonds for the building of a gravity water sys-' tern. This assures Newport an ab undance of pure water. The local Rebekah Lodge gave a Linen Shower for Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Arnold on their linen anniver sary, last Friday evening, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Schenck. A modeling contest was indulged in, Mrs. R. P. Goin and Mr. J. A. Peterson winning the prizes. Refreshments were served and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Those present were. Mr. and Mrs. A.
