Oregon fir is becoming a favorite
wood for car builders says A. B.
Wastell, secretary of the Oregon
and Washington Lumber Manufac
turers' Associations, who has just
returned from the East. Not only
is it used for sills and heavy timbers
in hv.ilding passenger equipment
but for siding and finishing as well.
As a result of Mr. Wastell's visit,
the Oregon wood will be more ex
tensively used for this purpose in
future.
Last night a party of four young
ladies Ruby and Wilda Starr,
Ethel Harpole, and Elsie Davis of
Eugene left Corvallis for a tramp
over the mountains to Yachats.
They were accompanied by Mrs .
Starr, who is driving a team of
horses. The first stop was made
this side of Philomath. At that
time the young ladies were fresh as
daisies, having made the eight miles
in good time. The young ladies
are dressed in khaki uniform and
areas "natty" as anything one ever
sees in pictures. If they should
happen to meet any bears on their
70 mile jaunt those hears are cer
tain to succumb to the charming
femininity invading their haunts.
Seventy miles of walking for girls
is something of more than passing
moment, but it is safe to say th'at
the trip will prove a delight to the
young people, says the Corvallis
Gazette-Times.

caves as a National reserve meets
witli the hearty approval of the
people of this state, who are inter
ested in preserving its natural won
ders. One. squiye mile including
the entrance to the caves has been
made a reservation, belonging to
the government, by proclamation
just signed. The caves make up a
wonderful collection of roomy cav
erns and galleries in the side of a
mountian in the Gray back range,
about 80 mill's south of (i rants Pass.
Portland will have an improved
market, fjr the livestock of the
Northwest, early in the coming
month when the big stockyards on
t lie Peninsula will be opened.- It
is said the new facilities to be offer
ed for the marketing of stock will
lie the best on the Pacific Coast.
At the start the yards will have a
rapacity of 75 cars, or nearly 2000"
head of cattle; 10,000 head of
sheep, or about 73 cars; and 4000
head, or 50 cars, of hogs. This
capacity can easily be doubled as

packing plants now being built on
