SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year , - - - 1 1 r0 Six Mot) the - - 75 Three Months - 50 Elections For 1908, Registration reopens Sept. 20. (Hoses for election Oct. 20. Presidential election Nov. 3. While Mr. OT.rien is in this county it would he a good scheme for those fellows down at Newport to pet together anil decide which of their various petitions to the rail road company they want honored the one asking for the noon train service, or the old morning and evening schedule and lay the mat ter hefore that official. .TikW SfnH in his address hefore the good roads meeting here last Friday spoke at considerable length on the tourist travel that this county would get if we had a first class automobile road leading to the Val ley. As bad as our Dads are we have had ji great deal of that kind of travel in from the Valley to the seaside this summer. If tourists want to visit this seaport had enough for a few of them to risk their necks on the roads we now have, what would we get in the way of that kind of travel if we had a first class road for them to ride over. We have the finest beach, the finest scenery, the best climate in the world, now why not help nature just a little and make it possible for people to come and see what we have. The tourists arc not the only people to be benefitted by such a road. Every man, ' woman and child living in the county would he directly 'benefitted. . Notice to Taxpayers. Notice is hereby given that the Hoard of Equalization will meet at the ollicee of the County Judge, at Toledo, Oregon, on Monday the 10th day of October, 11)08, for the purpose of examining and correct ing the 11(08 assessment rolls. The law requires that all petitions or applicants for .the reduction of a particular assessment shall be made in writing, verified he the oath of the applicant or his attorney, and .must be filed with the Hoard during the First wkkk it is by law 're- . oX'iKEi) to HE in session, and any petition or appMcation not so made, verified, and filed shall not be con sidered or acted upon by the Hoard, and notice is hereby given to each and every taxpayer assessed upon said rolls, that if lie fails to appear before said Hoard, or files with said Hoard a verified ietition, during the first week of its session, he will be unable to obtain relief before the County "Court, as the Court will hereafter absolutely refuse to allow any rebate of any taxes paid unon the' 1908 tax rolls, for the reason that the law makes the Hoard of Equalization tlie proper authority for correcting said rolls. Dated at Toledo, Or., this lGth day of September, 1008. Hy order of the County Court. Ira Wade, County Clerk, City Clerk Lambert of East St. Iiouis is a candidate for the "mean est man" title. A couple, by mis take, applied to him for a license to w ed. He took the young man aside, obtained from him. a confession that this was not the only girl he had jver lov;ed.. Then he privately ob tained: a nuTiilar confession from the young wo man t representing that if his questions were- not answered a license could not be obtained , Ilav R. S. VAN CLEVE, toieS&EQon DEALER IN GENERAL MERCHANDISE Where you get the Rest Goods at the Iwest Prices. Call and I'll prove it ing gathered this information the clerk solemnly announced that on account of the couple's previous love affairs he would have to refuse to issue a license. "However," he added, Mr. Smith, the real marriage license clerk across the hall is not quite so particular. You might call on him." The couple obtained the license. Ex. Waldport Items. The Condor sailed SaturdjjJifter discharging her wet cargo. She carried 'out potatoes and cheese. The summer season is not over at Waldport. There has been more travel during the past week than at any other time this season. Capt. Geo. Tyler was with us several days last week and exhibited several fine talking machines. He gave several concerts at Kent's hall. Several weeks ago it was reported that the road to tidewater was com pleted. This was correct but we are sorry to say that drivers have reported the road as unsafe and siqicrvisor Evens will probably have to close it to travel unless work is done on it at once. Postmaster Wakefield has made out a number of orders recently for hunters applying for a licenses. The fine paid two weeks ago hy a Waldport, citizen has had a good effect on the County Treasury. The Alsca cannery may yet run this season. Elmore and Co. have sent in a man to look over the situa tion and one of the facts brought to light was that F. (i. Slilhvell, re cent manager, did not make as good an offer fur fish as he was author ized to. The difference was one cent per fish. Quite an item to the fishermen during a season. ' A dance was given hy the hand in Even's hall Friday evening in stead of Saturday as heretofore. The change was made at the re quest of the fishermen who do not fish Friday night on account of not being able to get their fish out of Yaquina on Sunday. Should the cannery open the dances will he re sumed on Saturday evenings. . Meadow Creek. The woods are getting full of hunters now, look out for your scalps Four of the heliograph men pas sed through here today on their way to Table Mountain. Mrs. J. T. Calkins visited her daughter Mrs. F. Lang Saturday. Mr. Burns and partner' of Port land are on the creek again for an other elk hunt. We hope they will have better luck this time. Nathert Watkin returned home today from Toledo where he has been helping his brother-in-law, John Crooks, build a hen house. The game warden accompanied Wm. Sharp were looking out for the interests of the elk over here but found nothing. Mr. Daniels of Big Elk is hauling out chittim hark this week to To ledo for F. M. Ncal. S. J. Stewart and family returned home from the Valley last Sunday. They reported a good time. FOR A SPRAINED ANKLE.
