Whereas, The immutable laws of Divinity have fixed a span beyond which human life may not be ex tended, and Whereas, Our Comrade, H. R. Sturdevant, has yielded obedience to that mandate, the secret of which none may penetrate and the wisdom of which none may question, and taken his abode in the quiet of the little green tent whose curtain never swing outward, and Whereas, We recognize that Com rade Sturdevant, by his patriotic loyalty to his country and by his indomitable courage and heroic en durance as a soldier of the Civil War has left an impress upon the members of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Woman's Relief Corps of no ordinary character; therefore, be it Resolved, By Abe Lincoln W. R. C, No. 49, that by his death we have lost a valued friend and ad viser, the community a man of heroic character and his country one who in a marked degree exem plified that devotion to the basic principals of free government which marked an epoch in our nation's history and establishad the republic upon an imperishable foundation. Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of Abe Lincoln Woman's Relief Corps, and a copy "be sent to the Lincoln County Leader for publication and to our sister, Ina Sturdevant, the wife of our deceased comrade, Cap tain Sturdevant. Baker passed through from the Valley to his home at Newport yesterday. Rev. and Mrs. W. F. Rogers went to Salem Monday afternoon to at tend conference of the M. E. church. . W. h. Haines and Ed Payne re turned yesterday afternoon from Southern Oregon where they have been for the past several weeks. Maurice Anderson returned Mon day from a trip to Portland. Con Christiansen of Corvallis has been visiting at home this week; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ellsworth of Albany visited Toledo friends Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. A., Hurley left the first of the week for a visit at Al bany. Earnest Chitwood of Eddyville was having dental work done here Tuesday. George McBride and Frank Gat trell returned .from a trip to Port land Saturday. Mrs. C. G. Copeland came up from Newport, Wednesday and went jover to Siletz. Mr. and Mrs J. W. Robertson went to Portland Monday.afternoon for a few days' visit. Mrs. Elizabeth Comer returned Monday from a visit with her daughters and parents at Monroe. Mr. and Mrs. George Hall re turned home on the excursion Sun day from 1 a trip to Portland and Salem. - Charles Bradeson and Ed Altree, Tuesday, completed the McJunkin dyke along the east bank of Olalla slough. B. F. ' Benson the Oliver type writer man of Seattle, was selling typewriters on this bay the latter part of last week. County Surveyor Jim Derrick de parted Monday afternoon for South ern Oregon. He has a government contract to survey a township in Harney county. . Carl Davis of Upper Siletz was in the city Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. Davis acted as witness for Ned Clark in making proof o:i the lat ter's homestead. Mr. and Mrs. 0. G. Dalaba of Elk City were in Toledo Wednes day. Mrs. Dalaba will move to Toledo to place the children in school this winter. Mrs. Esther Bellinger after an extended visit with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Scott Lane, of Siletz, returned Monday afternoon to her home at Pendleton. Mrs. A. Bradeson and daughters, Berdie and Juliette, and son, Arthur, returned yesterday after noon from the hopyards, where they have been picking hops. Renus Arnold with the launch Abigail II. took a crowd down to Newport Wednesday. . Among those abard were Mrs. Lee Wade, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wade, Dye Wade, Arthur Nye, Miss Zoa Nye, Mr. and Mrs. C. H.- Williams, M. L. Campbell and A. T. Peterson. Chas Stouder of Waldport was in Toledo Tuesday. Mr. Stouder withhis family were on their way to Arizona for the benefit of Mr. Stouder's health, which has,, not been good for some time. We are sorry to lose Mr. Stouder and family from our county, but hope the climate of Arizona will prove beneficial to him. The Carnival. The Fruit and Vegetable Carnival to be held at Toledo Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 7, 8 and 9, will be the best attended fair ever held in the county. A greater interest is being manifested in every section of the county than at any other time. The exhibits will be great in number and of the finest quality. While almost everything will be free, as no admission will be charged and no charges for entry of exhibits, a great many special prizes are to be given. Besides the exhibits there will be many other attractions. Several of the most prominent speakers of the state have been secured to deliver addresses during the evenings. Sports will be held on the baseball grounds. There will be, baseball, football, races.and other sports. A band and orchestra" will furnish music during day and evening. A dance will be given one evening during the carnival. The good roads meeting to le held in the cir cuit courtroom on the afternoon of the second day of the carnival will be very interesting and instructive to all. A complete program will be given in next week's issue. Some Building in Toledo. Although Toledo is not booming she is steadily growing, as is evi denced by the many new buildings being built in all parts of the town this Fall. Scarcity of carpenters and building material has held building operations back consider able. Following is a list of some of the buildings going up' at present : Attorney C. E. Hawkins is build ing a large modern residence on the hill east of, Mrs. Sturdevant's home This will be, when completed, one of the largest and' finest residences in Toledo. G. R. Schenck has just about completed his residence at the cor ner of Second and Graham streets. This is a two story house, with modern conveniences. County School Superintendent R. P. Goin is building a residence just west of Mr. Hawkins'. Frank Carson has removed his old house and is building a much larger one at his home near the Methodrst"church . Antone Jacobson is building a good-sized residence on the old Van Cleve property north of the Thiel cottages. C. R. Ellsworth is building a large addition to his hotel ou the Water Front.. He has also just completed a good barn near the railroad track in the south part of town. J. J. Gaither is building a resi dence in the southeast part of town, east of Gildersleeve's. Charley Altree is building an eight room house near the sawmill. I. J. Pepin waH down from Chit wood Wednesday. Attorney L. L. Swan of Albany was doing business here this week. Section Foreman Henry Gannon left Monday for a trip to Albany and Portland. ' Miss Winona Hooker went to Portland Wednesday for a visit with her sisters for a week. Mrs. A. W. Morgan and children left for Idaho, Wednesday, where they will visit relatives and friends. Canvass gloves at Stewart's Store. Dr. Carter is up from Newport today. Ladies' Misses' and children' rubbers at Stewart's. Ches Morrison of Pioneer was a Newport visitor Sunday. Dudley Trapp of Chitwood was a Newport visitor Sunday. Scott Lane and family of Siletz are visiting friends in Toledo this week. George Schenck returned Mon day noon from a visit to the State Fair at Salem. John Steel left Monday afternoon ' for a visit at Salem, Portland, Van-j couver and other points. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Williams of Newport were visiting among friends in Toledo the first of the week. Ned Clark was over from Siletz Tuesday making proof on his home stead before County Clerk Ira Wade. Henry E. Collins returned Mon day afternoon to Ashland, where he will spend the winter in a dryer climate. Lawrence Prescott departed today ' for the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis, which ho will attend the coming winter. j Vivian Cartwright returned Tues-' day afternoon from a short visit to the Valley. He stopped off at To ledo for a day's visit. Mrs. R. S. VanCleve went to Al bany Monday afternoon for a visit with her aunt, Mrs. Virgil Parker. She returned Wednesday. Mrs. Julia Parker and grandson, Clyde McMillan, returned Wednes day afternoon from a two weeks' visit w,ith relatives at Albany. Mr. and Mrs. L. M. They expect to be gone till they find one. Owing to the fact that the local Woodmen have leen unable Io get together, they will not hold the un veiling ceremony at the grave of their neighbor A. B. Crosno, next Sunday. ' Rev. C. T. Whittlesey, pastor of the Presbyterian church at New port, will preach at the M. E. church in Toledo next Sunday morning. Subject, "Advantages of the Present Age." All cordially in vited. Mr, and Mrs. T. H. Horning came up from Otter Rock Saturday, after having spent the summer at that beautiful resort. Mr. Horning returned Monday to do some work on their hotel before leaving it for the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Bon Wade of La Grande are visiting Mr. Wade's par ents, Mr and Mrs. W. J. Wade, in Toledo. This is Mr. Wade's first visit at home in several years. Mr. Wade will return the last of the week to LaGrande and Mrs. Wade will go to Southern Oregon for a visit with relatives. Manager O'Brien of the Harri man railroads while in this county last week, after hearing the com plaints of our people about the poor train schedule on the C. & E., promised Lee Wade, Judge Swopo, Captain Bensell and others that as soon as he returned he would ar range to have a better service. U. S. Engineers Here. Last Monday a company of engineers from the United States Engineering Corps arrived from Vancouver, Washington. They immediately went into camp on the hill back of Frank Carson's -residence. They are under the command of Lieutenant Hayden and are making a geodetic survey of this vicinity f r the War Department, and the work will require some time to complete. The work will include elevations of different places, cruising the timber and classifying the Bame, rioting the character of the soils and the formation of rocks, platting of streams and any other matters that may In? of general interest to the department. ... Waldport Items. Taft and Sherman pictures have made their appearance in Wald port. It has been definately announced by Elmore & Co. that our cannery will not run. Good opening for somebody. A Taft Club was organizied Wednesday at the office of the C. J. Smith Realty Co. A good number of Republicans were present and joined tho organization. Mrs. T. S. Finnegan of Portland has purchased a lot here for tho purpose of erecting a summer cot tage. Mrs. Finnigan and family spent an enjoyable summer with us this season. It is reported that our school will not open this year until the. first Monday in November. Being possessed of as fine a school builds ing as there is anywhere in this county we should open our schools the usual time. Our sportsmen have enjoyed their privilege of killing elk this season. Besides a numlwr that have been killed by Valley people who camo here for the purposoof hunting, our local boys have reported up to date as follows: James Wolf, Cassio. Wolf, Skiff Morrison, Neven Bar clay, L. V. Colvin, Virgil Howell, and John Gaten, one elk each. Mr, Colvin secured as fine a pair of horns as could 1h desired and by far the prettiest pair of (oeth wo have ever seen. George W. Blodgott and Mr. Sterling, lapidists, of Portland aro in camp on the teach .south of Waldport, Thoso gentlemen were here in May and secured some very unusual flpecimends which they took to Portland and polished. One stone which was cut up into seven pieces about an inch long in especially fine. It is a clear agate impregnated with pyrites of iron in the form of ferns and queer as it may seem tho entire stone takes a polish as fine as a clear Btono with no pyrites.
