A petition was circulated in To ledo 'Wednesday asking the railroad company to continue the 'morning and evening train when the extra passenger train is taken off the run between Yaquina and Albany the middle of September. The petition was signed by most every business man in town. There is a great demand for first-class dairy cows and the Will amette valley is being thoroughly g me over by buyers of this kind of cattle. Sales arc reported at $45 to $50 per head, and cows of the kind wanted are not very plentiful. Think of the bright future for dairying in the western part of Oregon 1 Salem Statesman. W. II. Carlyle who has been en gaged as dean of the livestock jud ges at the Greater Oregon State Fair (Sept. 14-19); is one of the most experienced judges in America having served at the most important expositions. Among these are the Omaha exposition, the Internation nl Livestock Show at Chicago, the Charlestown exhibition, the Canad ian National exposition at Toronto and the St. Imis world's Fair. Mr. Carlyle is dean of the Colorado state agricultural college. A fire in the business seetion of Albany early Sunday morning des troyed $17,000 worth of buildings and stocks. The fire started in the rear of the Eiler piano house and is suppoKcd to be the work of an incendiary. In speaking of the fire 'the Herald of that city says the fire alarm system was out of whack and it took considerable time for the nightwatch to awaken the peo p'e and call out the fire department, then the hydrant wrenches were m:; s'ng from the hose cart and sev ' end minutes were lost before water could be turned on after the hose was coupled on, and the fire ex tinguishers wouldn't work. They sure have a fine fire-fighting system in that town. English Walnuts. Prof. C. J. Iifwis of the Oregon Agricultural College has this to say in regard to walnut culture: Ore gon has proper conditions for grow ing the English walnut, but great care should be exercised in selecting nuts, seedlings and grafted trees, That some trees bear inferior nuts, or do not bear at all, is not so much nn indication of unsuitable soil as it is that the trees are from seed lings not chosen with care. How ever, some soil in Oregon will not grow the English walnut. Soils underlaid near the surface by liard- ji;in, and those underlain near the ! surface with rock, cement gravel or 'loose gravel are to lie avoided. 1 The price of Englisn walnuts has , steadily risen since 1896. One of the features of the Greater Oregon State Fair (Sept, 14-19) w ill be the herd of eight performing Shetland pontes, which is owned in Fresno, Cul. The ponies will be raced every day at the fair, with Uy jockios, the distance to 1 one fourth of a mile. None of the Shetlands is more than 42 inches high. The ponies will lx? at the service of the children during the day a nil a ride will lc one of the delights of the big fair for the youngsters. "Meet me in the Corral" will be the password for thousands of pleas ure seekers at the Greater Oregon State Fair (Sept. 14-19). The Luiiui is I lie aiiiusuliienl uuu concession street at the big exposi tion. Sideshows, stands and many of the resturants on' the grounds will be located here. Numerous free acts and features are being signed up. The "Corral" is a dean and legitimate attraction, no games of chance, immoral shows or fakirs being allowed. Send Us the News. The poor newspaper man when created, was only furnished with one pair of ears and eyes, lie can not publish the news if he docs not hear or see it, unless someone either tells him or sends it in. Every newspaper wants to publish the news.- The better the paper the more prosperous it will be. Local news items are especially hard to run down, How many times have you been approached by the news paper man for an item of news and told him you knew nothing of in terest. Probably at the time your family was away on a visit or some one from out of town was visiting at your home. Of course you don't mean to deceive the scribe, yet when you received your paper you won dered why you family or friends were not mentioned. A good way to avoid all this is to kindly inform us of the facts or drop a note in the postoflico to the paper. The one item may not amout to much, but several columns of such news is the life of a local paper.
