Litchfield of Yaquina was a county seat visitor last Tuesday. O. G. Dalaba of Elk. City was a Toledo visitor between trains Tues day. Homes Blair of Newport had business in the city Wednesday forenoon. Mr. and Mrs. George McBride returned to their homestead Tues day morning. Remember the base ball game Sunday. Philomath vs Elk City on the Toledo ground. Wm Enos the Elk City sawmill man was in the county seat on business Tuesday evening. O. A. Powell returned Monday evening from St. Helens. He went on down to his homestead vnear Kernville. Arch -Deacon Chambers of St. John, Oregon, will hold services at the Episcopal church next Sunday evening at 8 o'clock. All are in vited to attend. The rain of last week drove County Surveyor Derrick and crew out of the woods last Saturday. They are surveying out the Drift Creek- Toledo wagon road. Claude McClure while hewing with an adz, Tuesday, had the mis fortune to cut his foot quite badly. He came down on the evening train and had Dr. Burgess fix up his foot. Married, at the Commercial Hotel, Thursday evening, June 25, 1908, Charles M. Olts, of King county, Washington, and Lucy Munson of Lincoln county, Rev. C. R. Ells worth officiating. Frank Sturdcvant while sawing wood with the gasoline saw last Thursday attempted to stop' the saw with his hand, consequeutly he now carries his hand in a sling. He did not lose, any fingers just Bplit a couple of them. The old soldiers of the G. A. R. arid the members of the W. R. C. and many other visitors from To ledo are at Newport this week at tending the G. A. R and W. R. C. encampment. Tuesday evening Abe Lincoln Corps of this place gave a reception to S. F. Blythe, Department Commander G. A. R. and Mrs. Cora M. Davis, Depart ment President W. B..C. and their official staffs and invited guests. Last evening the exemplification of the ritual was given by Abe Lin coln Corps. Old Soldiers at Newport. The old boys who fought in the hardest war in the history of the world are having the "time of their lives" at Newport this week. The twenty-seventh annual encamp ments of the Grand Army of the Republic and Woman's Relief Corps of Oregon are in session at this fa mous summer resort. Delegates and visitors have been crowding the trains since Saturday evening. Tuesday noon train carried one hundred, and the evening train composed of eleven coaches was crowded. Newport has turned the town oven to "The Boys in Blue." Elk City vs Siletz. List Sunday uftcriicuu hum a big day for baseball enthusiasts in To ledo. The game was played by the Elk City and Siletz teams on the local diamond and was a "master ful production of the great national game." A good crowd witnessed the game, many people came from Elk City and Siletz with the teams. The day was fine, but the recent rains had made the ground a little slippery. This was the first game of the season between these teams and the playing was good. The batteries were: Elk City, Parks and Van Orden; Siletz, Bar ker and Bell. Frank Carson, Um pire. The game was another of those pleasant games without ragging and wrangling. , - These same teams will play at Toledo on the Fourth. Elk City will meet Philomath here next Sunday. Miss Lillie Miller who visited and attended Institute here last week, returned to her home at Pioneer Saturday. Billy. Simpson, ElkCitys' pitcher, came down Saturday evening to at tend the dance and be here to play ball Sunday. Mrs. G. M. McBride returned Saturday evening from a three weeks' visit with her parents at Oregon City. Her daughter, Mild red accompanied her home. I Joseph Blower was up from Mill 4 yesterday. Tomas Ferr and son of Oyster ville were in Toledo Tuesday. Miss Blanch Jeffereys is visiting this week with Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Fish. Walter Hall of Siletz returned from a trip to Portland Monday evening. Wm. Manor the C. & .E. bridge carpenter was in the city Tuesday evening. A. W. Morgan of Euchre Moun tain was a county seat visitor last Saturday. J. E. Wilson of Chitwood spent a few minutes in Toledo Wednesday afternoon. C. E. Hawkins went to Elk City Tuesday morning returning on the noon train. Mrs. Woodford of Elk City was a Toledo visitor between trains Wednesday. F. M. Wadsworth came down from Portland last Friday to visit old Toledo friends. Mr. and Mrs. C. II. Gardner went to Cottage Grove Tuesday for a few days visit. Mr. Waggoner is mourning the death of his wife, which oc- cured at their home near Medford last Friday. Judge Hanna of that county sustained the former order enjoining the county court of Jack son county from declaring the city of Medford dry under the state law as a result of the county having cast a majority vote in favor of pro hibition. In his decision the court practically decided that the late election was nullified, as far as this this morning for Eastern Washing county is concerned, and that the ton where Mr. Richards will run a county court will be sustained in ' machine during harvest. They will probably return of the last election, Teachers' Institute. The county teachers' institute held here last week, closed Friday evening with a lecture to parents at the M. E. church by Superintendent L. R. Alderman of the Eugene schools. The lecture was good and was well received by the large crowd in attendance. Miss Maggie Hamp ton of Rocco sang a solo and Miss Estella Gannon of this place played an organ solo. The institute was well attended by teachers from all parta of the county, and was pronounced the best ever held in the county. County Superintendent Bethel was ably assisted in the work by State Superintendent Ackerinaii,' Prof. L. it. Alderman and Charle.-t K. Jones, editor of the Teachers' Monthly. We intended giving a complete report of the institute In this issue, but are unable to do so owing to being unable to attend.
