SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year - - fl 50 Six Months - - 7ft Three Months - 50 The Leadkr has refrained from taking any hand in the political fights lx;fore the primaries because the Leader is Republican and the candidates for nomination are Re publican and they are all good com petent men. For Joint Representative we have the present incumbent, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Gardner who arc both good men for the position and either Avould make us a good Rep resentative. For Sheriff the Republicans have t wo substantial men to choose from. Sheriff Ross has made this county a good, competent official for the past several terms. Mr. Dunn po hcsscss all the requirements necessary f ir the making of a Sheriff. Clerk Ira Wade has things all his own way and we are betting on Ira. For assessor we have three of, the best men in the county for the posi tion. Ball, Laws and Miller, any one would make us a good assessor. The School Superintendent's office has two competent men after it. Mr. Bethersthe present Superinten dent, has held the office long enough that we all know that he is a careful, competent official. Mr. Goin is a school man and would fill the posi tion satisfactorily. County Treasurer McCluskcy will hoi I the office for another term. For Commissioner we have two aspirants, Mr". Kentta and Mr. Keady, both thorough business men and both good Republicans. Dr. Carter for Coroher has a cinch on the job. the office of Surveyor seems to bo going to the Democratic candi dite, Z. M. Derrick. The primaries occur today. The polls will open at 12 o'clock noon and close at 7 o'clock this evening. Over in Benton county they are in a muss over the primary election. The clerk failed to delievcr the bal lot boxes to the sheriff within the time set by law, and they are now wondering whether the election will Iks legal. Under the law the ballot Itoxes should have l)een delivered to the sheriff not later than five days before the primaries, and they were not delievcred until Tuesday morn mj. Although late the sheriff ac cepted the ballot boxes and placed them in the several precincts. In yesterday's Reporter Brother ('lark attempts to hurt our feelings , by bringing up that old stale charge ; that fins lieen used against news papers ever since newspapers were first printed, that someone elcs is running the Leader. No, we refuse to get mad, let our feelings get hurt or even sell out the paper and quit. BURGESS, Agent, Toledo, Oregon Larkey Logan Convicted. In the Federal Court at Portland Wednesday Larkey Logan was con victed of manslaughter for the kill ing of Willie Gamier at Siletz, March 19. The jury recommended Logan to the leniency of the court. Sentence had not been pronounced as we go to press. Judge Swope, who defended Lar key,' and about twenty witnesses re turned home last evening. Abe Logan, brother of Larkey, who was detailed by Judge Swope to act as chaperone for the other Indians to keep them sober during the trial, failed in - his duties, and Judge Swope Wits handicapped in his de fense by having a very few sober witnesses. Abe did not return home last night having been unavoidably detained for ten days at Kellys Butte where he will pound rock for Multnomah county, the Jesuit pf getting drunk and disorderly. Dollar that Can't Be Spent. Every dollar spent in advertising is not only a seed dollar which grows a profit for the merchant, but is ac tually retained by him even after he has paid over to the publisher, says an exchange, and adds the follow ing reasons: Advertising creates a good will well worth the cost of publicity. While advertising uses funds it does not use them up. It helps the founder of a business to growrich iness without having the profits of the business withdraw from him. It changes a name to an institution , an institution which will survive after the death of its builder. It is really an insurance policy which costs nothing, for it pays a premium each year instead of call ing for one.-and renders it possible Advertising renders business stronger titan the man indepen dent of his presence. A business which is not adver tised must rely upon the personality its proprietor, and personality in business is a decreasing factor. The public does not want to know the man who owns the store it is not interrsted in him but in his goods. When an unadvertised business is sold it is only worth as much as its stock of goods and fixtures. There is no good will to be paid for it does not exist it has never been created. The name over the door means nothing except to the limited stream of people from the immedi ate neighborhood, any of whom could tell you more about some store ten miles away which has regularly delivered its shop news to their firesides in the family news paper. To the Voters of Lincoln County. I am a candidate for Joint Rep resentative for Lincoln and Polk counties, subject to the action of the Republican voters at the pri mary election April 17th. - The salary and perquisites of the office are not sufficient to warrant my making a personal canvass of the district. Nevertheless, I am anxious for every Republican vote, and take this means of soliciting your favor. It is now Lincoln county's turn to choose the Representative, and I trust the voters will so see it,, and vote for Lincoln county's candi date. Yours Respectfully. Chas H. Gardner.
