IVanch. Dlractor Idaho Experiment Sutioo. Moscow. The stock breeder Is often seriously handicapped In his work by the more or less comDlete isolation of hia work. This is especially true In the West wnere many sections ate not as tnickly settled as the older portions of the country. Sometimes this condition ia dne to a mistaken attitude on the part oi tne breeder a tendency whioh is quite natural to men who are not accus tomed - to organized effort in aocom plishing a given object I refer to the quite prevalent whim that if several men ens ace In tha Rum a hnalnnaa tha work will be over-done, and the mar ket for the products destroyed or seri ously impaired. In no department cf agriculture is this condition leaa libalv to prevail than in the production of V J II I I i. i pure uiou ui cvru wen urou live BIOTA. The more animals of merit produoed in anv riven locality, the createp liknli. hood of a better market, owing to the lact tnat often a few superior animals, even, are not sufficient to attract the interest of the prospective bnyer. The buyer which the stock breeder wishes to interest is the man who is looking for several head, a car load, or nnrhnna several carloads, of animals at one time. Any one who has attempted to iook np a carioaa oi cattle or any par ticnlar type or breed, can well under stand how difficult it is to find the de- sirea number of suitable animals In anv one locality; and in case the ani mals have to be selected from remnta herds what a vexing problem it is to assemDie tne animals at any given point for shipment. Now if a number of farmers irj any given locality would all agree to breed the same kind of livestock, then it might be possible for a buyer to get the entire lot desired from that particular section. Another important point in favor of community Dreeding would be tbe op portunity offered for comparison. When a breeder is isolated from other men who are handling the same kind of stock, he may not have the opportunity to check up his stock to see if the de sirable points are being brought out as they should be. Borne important char acteristics may be overlooked unless there is some standard of excellence available, with which to compare his own results. One Of tbe most serious hinrlrnrmpa in the improvement of the breeds of live block in tne weBt, is tbe difficulty in securing new blood when it should be Introduced. Several individual cases have come under our observation where a splendid foundation was allowed to run out, through too close breeding, which could not be avoided, exeent at great expense and trouble in securing new blopd from remote sections of the country. The Question of feed and rr rnnM be much better solved In community if a dozen men were hand ling the same kinds of live stock, rather than a dozen different types and breeds. These ideas are being put into actual practice in some sections of the Missis sippi valley, and if needed thnra. wh APA the country is densely populated, it is uuuujy important in tne rac'no North- A. m west, wnere iarmera nave cot many of tbe Conveniences of tranannrtatlnn and rapid communication that are en joyed in the more densely populated seotions of the country.
