The White Is King OF SEWING MACHINES Call on F. II. Macoonald. Gen'l Agent Newport, Oregon. ' I The City Flour and Feed Store de livers free to all put ts of the citj Anti-vTreating. Sixty five meu of Kelso have formed a society whose object is to discourage "treating." These nieu pledge them (elves to bnv their own "drink" and their own cigars, and agree that they 'will not tre.it any person or persons to any cigars, liquors, soda, lemonade or any other beverage," nor will lliey al low other to 'trait" them. This ap plies every where except when enter tainiug guests in their own homes, and except atappliable to "Udy friends" as the agreement calls them. It is a good scheme and one to be commended. Not only is it a measure of economy, hut it is, of course, a step towards temperance. Drinking begins In association. Unasked, not one young man in a hundred would drink. The thought of entering a saloon and imbibing liquor would never enter his head. With most men, dt inking is maoh like eat ing olives, an acquired taste. Few there are, if any, who have a natural craving for liquor. In others the liking is latent, and something never to be de veloped, .doubtless, except by the im portunities nf associates. The man who goes out by himself on a lonely "spree" is a rarity. Drinking is foun ded on association, and in America in temperance is based ou "treating. If this practice could be eliminated, one cannot doubt that temperance would gain. The society at Kelso has excluded "lady friends," by which, we suppose, it means women, from its agreement lu the West that ran be siifely done. In the East, if the reports of Chicago ministers be reliable, it could uot be. Still, it is usnully wise to except women from almost everything. She generally has her own way, and if she wants mere man to "treat," he's going to do it. Tacoma News. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy a Safe Medicine for Children.
